Also a possible marriage for Mary Jane Hayes (possible mother of Josephine)

Marriages Sep 1905 (>99%)
EDGE Elizabeth Runcorn 8a 511
xxxx HAYES Mary Jane Runcorn 8a 511 xxxx
JEFFS Harry Runcorn 8a 511
ROWLES Charles Samuel Runcorn 8a 511

................but this is all speculation so you will need to look into it all a bit closer and get some proof from some certificates.

...........................
1911
This looks to fit above marriage, but it states that the couple have been married for 12yrs, which is not true?

However, Josephine would be 12yrs old in 1911, so that fits. Maybe the couple just said that they had been married for 12yrs in case someone knew that she had another child????

I have a theory about her mother's side of the family????

Josephine was illegitimate, therefore her mother's name must have been Hayes.
If the baptism record is the correct one, then her mother was called Mary Jane Hayes.

As Josephine was brought up by her Great Aunt , Mary Ann Hetherington (who never married), then Mary Jane's mother and Mary Ann must have been sisters.

There are very few marriages between Hetherington and Hayes, and only one for a female Hetherington to a male Hayes:-

Marriages Dec 1866 (>99%)
Bowker Thomas Manchester 8d 240
xxxx HAYES Henry Manchester 8d 240 xxxx
xxxx Hetherington Jane Manchester 8d 240 xxxx
Webb Mary A Manchester 8d 240

Looking on the census records I found this:-

Josephine,
You say you can't get back any further than Josephine Morris Hayes, do you mean that you can't get further back just on her father's side (with her being illegitimate) or on her mother's side also?

No I haven`t but will order one, might be worth it, otherwise feel a visit to Daresbury cemetery coming on! was told that the person who looked after Josephine was employed by her father to look after her, how true that is I don`t know

Catherine

Catherine Report 15 Apr 2013 16:46

From the census records it looks as though Josephine was looked after by her Great Aunt, who never married and was from Cumberland.

Do you have Josephine's marriage certificate?
One of my relies was illegitimate, father's name was not noted on birth certificate, but it was noted on her marriage certificate, so you never know.

Because my mum told me that her mother was illegitimate but knew that her father was a cheshire farmer called Joseph who lived at Moss Side Farm, the 1911 census confirmed this

Josephine

Josephine Report 15 Apr 2013 15:02

Think I have met a dead end, all I know about the daughter is that she was looked after by a Governess

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Apr 2013 14:59

As there is no record of his 'daughter' living with him, you are going to be unable to prove who her father was...........unless he is named on her birth cert, and even then..................

Why did you pick on the one you have found in 1911?
