Hmm that's interesting, Mary's sister Ann and her husband Joshua Bates called their first son Septimus. It seems to have been a family name though I haven't found its origin yet.
I thought I had found a Septimus in Rotherham but I can't find the reference now. Thanks for the extra information, Tony.

Yes, I did mean christening - doh!
Malachy Behan and Mary Clark married on 23rd Apr 1832, Rotherham, Yorkshire
John Behan and Rhoda Savage had 10 children including a John Septimus (b. 1860)

Thank you very much for that, Tony.
I had not found a husband for Mary Ann.
Her parents were I think William Clark and Elizabeth GRANT, married on 21 June 1801 at Sheffield Cathedral.
Apart from Ann and Mary Ann they had a son Edwin (23/7/1803) and another son Thomas christened 2nd June 1816.
(I think you mean that Mary Ann was *christened+ in the Cathedral on 2nd November 1817 ;-) )
We must be distant cousins.

In the 1851 Census, you missed off one person from the household, namely, John Behan, Nephew. John Behan is my Great, Great Grandfather. His parents were Malachi Behan and Mary Ann Clark (Ann’s sister, hence the Nephew). Malachi and Mary Ann were married in Rotherham on 23rd April 1832. Mary Ann Clark was born on 2nd Nov 1817 at Cathedral St Peter, Sheffied. Parents were William Clark and Elizabeth. They had another daughter the previous year, Ann Clark on 10th Nov 1816, same place.
John Behan married Rhoda Savage on 20th Feb 1855 at Ecclesall Church. Witnesses were Joshua and Ann Bates.
Malachi and John Behan appear in the 1841 Census (but not Mary Ann) along with William and Elizabeth Clark aged 64 and 67 respectively. Don’t know when Mary Ann died.
:-)

How can I have missed that???
Thank you very much indeed, Christina.

Actually I never thought of looking for Bate and Bate does not turn up on Soundex while searching for BateS. :-)
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :-D

Wonder if anyone on the site this morning can find this marriage in the 1830's, Sheffield/Ecclesall Bierlow?
Thanks!

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 16 Apr 2013 22:28

Indeed :) I was hoping someone with access to the Ancestry collection of West Yorkshire marriages might see this.
I guess that Joshua and Ann must have married just before 1837, always assuming that Septimus was their first child and there wasn't a previous baby who died.
Thanks for your interest Ann.

I've gone half way through this document - it's very lengthy and my scrolling finger is worn out!!!

be nice if someone else came on and had a go

Thank you for your efforts, Ann.
The Elizabeth Clark in 1861 is not the right one as she seems to have died between 1841 and 1851. I see there are two Elizabeths died in 1842 in Ecclesall, so one of them is probably her.
I have just found William and Elizabeth together in Ecclesall in the 1841 census.

I wonder if anyone can now find Joshua's marriage! :-D
Thanks
Beverley

Thanks also for Joshua Bate which is another possibility though I find it a bit unusual that he didn't call any of his sons James if that was his dad's name.
