Hello Bea, welcome to the boards.
A little more info as to how you connected to him would be useful ...... Names of parents, spouse, children, birthplace - whatever you have.
Have you used the "Search Trees" facility to seeif anyone else has him in their tree.

Thank you very much for your replies.
The only information I have on Bartholemew is his son's marriage certificate in 1881 on which he is entered as deceased. His son was Edwin John Wool born Shoreditch in London about 1852. I don't know who was Edwin's mother. I seem to have hit a dead-end.
I've searched the trees in Genes Reunited with no success.
The birth date of the Irish Bartholemew Wool seems a good match. I wonder if he came over to England, made an unfortunate marriage, then scarpared! He was down as a labourer on the son's marriage cert.
I am afraid that I cannot find his son's birth either.

As there were no penalties for not registering births before 1875, many went unrecorded.
Try looking for a baptism for Edwin

Thank you for your posts and to Cynthia for showing me how to navigate.
Edwin J Wool had been married before 1888. He married Emily Davey at St. Swithern's Church, East Grinstead, Sussex, on 19 Nov 1881. Emily died in 1918. Edwin gave his age as 29 on the marriage cert.
By 1888 he had only aged 2 years in 7! Alice and Edwin's daughter Catherine was born in the fourth quarter of 1888 so Alice was pregnant when she married.
Edwin's father, Bartholemew, was entered on both marriage certificates.

Bea, that 1881 marriage is just in the name of John - is it definitely Edwin and not perhaps a brother?

On the marriage cert to Alice in 1888 .............. Edwin says he is a Bachelor????????
Occupation ......... Machine Driller
One of the witnesses, Minnie Day, appears on 2 other certificates on the same pages. Probably a "professional" witness.

I need to be convinced that Edwin John who married in 1888 and John who married in 1881 are the same person!
Was just thinking that this birth would fit the chap who married 1881:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page Births Sep 1852 Wool John _over Holborn 1b 368
EDIT: Think this might be John Lover Wool who went to Australia 1863. ..................................................................................................................
This would, I think, be the John who married Eliza in 1881 just prior to marriage:

So it looks like he was a bit of a fibber as well as a bigamist!

I am wondering if Bartholemew was a bit of a 'fly by night ' too and went off to America!

I'd thought with a nice unusual name like that, that it would be easy to track him - however, there are quite a few chaps with the same name both in America and Ireland and a range of birth years.
I'll have a sift through .....
