Just to muddy the waters further...

I think it extremely likely the 'w' on the Phillimore transcript indicates William Hopwell/Hopnett was a widower.

Is the following possibly his first marriage?

It suggests to me the handwriting on the register was hard to read! ;-)

Family search has it as William Hopwell and Ann Torner, the Phillimore's transcript as Wm Hopnett and Anne Lorner.

***The Phillimore's transcript also has a 'w', for Wm Hopnett, does that indicate he was a widower?***

Unfortunately neither record had a link to a copy of the original register.

I was just trying to find the evidence for the marriage patchem mentioned, so that you could judge it for yourself.

Names did often vary quite a bit in spelling, especially in the times before many people could read or write. I've often seen a particular clergyman spell my family's surname one way when recording parish records, but the next incumbent might spell it differently. My 4 x great grandfather spelt his name one way when signing the parish register on his marriage, but the clergyman spelt it differently on the same record!

Thanks for this Kuncinta. Does that mean the name Hopewell was originally Hopnett
and has changed over the years?

Same marriage transcribed on this site:

http://leicestershireparishrecords.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/phillimores-marriages-prestwold.html

as:

Wm. Hopnett, w., & Anne Lorner, both of B. 1 Apr. 1733

EDIT:

"The abbreviations P. B. H. and C. stand for Prestwold, Burton, Hoton, and Cotes, respectively."

I got my birth information from Terry. I don't have the details of his wife Ann.
Will have another search in trees and request for more access.

Thanks for your help.

patchem

patchem Report 2 May 2013 06:53

It was not Terry's tree that I have access to.
The one I saw gave a marriage for William to Ann Turner.
Where did you get your birth information from?
Keep on waiting and hope others reply.

Apologies - I'm new to this and wasn't sure how to reply.

As far as I know Terry hasn't got any more info going back further than 1708.

Yes I have requested to view a couple of trees with the name William hopewell but Terry was the only one who has replied back so far.

All advice much appreciated

Lisa :-)

I appear to have access to someone who has William in his tree.

This is from his information, but no sources quoted, and no information on parents:

Welcome to the boards, Lisa.

Where did you find the information about the birth year of William?
(It also helps to know where you have already looked)

Thank-you.

Added:
A lot of people have him in their trees on here.
Have you tried to contact them by using the Search/Search All Trees tab, above.
