Sorted!

The certificate I have is the original with the re-registration date written on it.
The re-registered certificate was produced with his name as William Boardman Owen. I guess that one will show his Dad as James Owen.
Darn it!! Will I ever be able to find out who my real Great Grandfather was???
My great Grandma-Elizabeth Boardman -was living at 5 Lorne Grove,Urmston when she gave birth to William.

Thanks for that Jude-I will order again!! My curiosity is costing alotta but I need to get an answer!!!!

Can anyone find my Grandfather's death entry so I can order the death certificate? It might have something to do with the re-registry date-possibly!

William Owen b 19 July 1892

When you order from the gro website you can specify the gro reference which is the one flip posted above. So you select birth certificate, the year, boardman william, barton on irwell and the gro ref as above 8c 738

You will geg a summary sheet and the reference will be kn there plus the cert itself

alex

alex Report 12 Sep 2013 21:36

No I did not order under the GRO reference.
Excuse the ignorance, but the GRO paper that came with the re-registered certificate has an ACCOUNT NUMBER and a CUSTOMER REFERENCE NUMBER. It does not say-GRO ref anywhere on it. I presume it's the account number that Jude has asked for? Or is it on the actual certificate?

Births Sep 1892 (>99%)

Boardman William Barton I. 8c 738

Did you try ordering the birth cert using the GRO reference as shown above? Or did you just order without the reference?

Jude asked you for the GRO ref, not the order ref.

That's a spooky coincidence but not sure if related!!

Hi Jude
The reference is 4211005 (account no.) Cust, ref. no.COL212442/2013

I did try under the name William Boardman but they couldn't find one

Flip Report 12 Sep 2013 13:42

They were both living 66 Abbey ? Lane, higher Openshaw when they married:

Elizabeth Ann Boardman
Birth Year: abt 1866
Age: 28
Marriage Date: 1 Jan 1894
Parish: Higher Openshaw, St Clement
Parish as it Appears: Higher Openshaw, St Clement
Father's Name: William Boardman
Spouse's Name: James Owen
Spouse's Father's Name: John Owen
Reference Number: GB127.M799/1/2/1

His father John, gentleman - hers as already posted on the census returns. The witnesses Maud Boardman and Jonathan Gilbody

James was with his parents in Cheshire in 1891 but Elizabeth was not with him. As no one had found her in 1891 I was checking just in case they were together.

What information did you use to get the certificate - surely his birth was registered in Sept qtr 1892 under William Boardman

Births Sep 1892 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boardman William Barton I. 8c 738

There is no cross ref to a later re-registration on the image, though that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Did you order using the GRO reference?

Not sure why your mother would have named her father James on her marriage, she certainly wasn't brought up by grandfather James, as she wouldn't have known him:

James Owen
Probate Date: 2 Mar 1915
Death Date: 25 Jan 1915
Death Place: Lancashire, England
Registry: Manchester, England

Of 98 Higher rd, Urmston. Veg salesman. Probate to widow Elizabeth Ann Owen and Nathan Higginson Boardman, cotton waste merchant. Effects £836 15s

Hello Dea

The certificate i got back from GRO was -again-the re-registered one from 1937.

I have e mailed GRO to try and obtain the original. Is it possible that I won't be able to?
I am perplexed with this re-registered certificate. How can it be legal or mean anything without the father or even a made up father's name on there?
Do you happen to know?
Is it possible that my grandfather was adopted by James Owen as his own. In that case, it was a closed adoption and the natural father's identity is kept sealed.
Perhaps the real father did not know Lizzie was pregnant if she left service before it showed.
I really need to get to the bottom os this!!! Any help gratefully received!!!

ALWAYS order certs through the GRO site Alex !! - £9.25 ! - Many other sites are just a 'rip-off' !

Hello Dea

I gained more information about my grandfather-William Owen. I just received his birth certificate, but not his original one. James Owen was not my blood related great grandfather. That ties in with Elizabeth Boardman and James Owen's marriage happening after William was born.
William's birth certificate says he was registered under the legitimacy Act 1926 and the registry took place in 1937. There is no mention of William's father. Was this why it was re-registered,so the real father was not identified??
I received this certificate through a company and was stung for £25. Never again! I will now request William's actual original certificate and let you know more-hopefully!
