However, all the records are showing that your man was BEttison ................. despite what the ancestry trees are saying.


Remember that ancestry trees are not at all reliable ................ people take information from one tree, do not check whether or not it is correct, and it passes on from one to the next.



I would most definitely take the church records and the censuses over an ancestry tree :-D

you have to remember that very few of our ancestors were literate ......... and even many wealthy people were not much better


Thus, we all face the problem of mis-spellings of names.

Some of it is due to differences in pronunciation ........... think different dialects

Some due to barely literate recorders

Some due to out ancestors being unable to read or write, and thus unable to to check spellings in records.


Sometimes you just have to accept the most commonly used one!

I tend to think Parish Records ........ ie, baptisms and marriages ........... MIGHT be the most accurate before 1837. That's based on the idea that vicars were able to read and write ....... at least, most of them were!


I'm stuck with at least 6 different versions of my grandmother's family ................ Cottrell, Cotterell, Cottrill, Cotterill, Cottrall, Cotterall. I'm waiting for more versions to pop up!
