Hi all,
The family you arediscussing is the same family I have followed to this point of deciding if Vera had this child out of wedlock.
The only name Peter can remember being talked about is Thomas when he was a very small child.
Aubrey's next of Kin is Mrs AM Lobb and they share that address on the was service records. Would whe have been grandma Lobb?
Thomas (deceased) is acknowledged in the wedding announcement.
The Memorial notices of Reginald Thomas Lobb eventually mention Aubrey.
Aubrey isn't mentioned in Thomas' death notice as his child.
I have contacted BDM and asked how to get the birth certificate of Aubrey Wilfed Lobb as general searching is coming up empty.

cheers
Di

Sad isn't it :-(

Mind you if the grandparents were 'keeping up appearances' and claiming him as their son, you'd think he WOULD have been listed as a sibling of Reginald (and also as a son in Thos Francis' death notice)? Odd since he is definitely shown as their son in the wedding notice.

Thats exactly what went through my head after reading Cheri' posts, I suspect not :-(

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 May 2013 08:14

I wonder if Aubrey Wilfred knew who his real mother was?

EDIT:
There are a number of In Memoriam notices on Trove for Reginald Thomas Lobb who was killed in action 1918. They mention sisters Girlie and Doris and brother Cyril, no mention of Aubrey as a sibling. (I reckon Girlie must be Vera Catherine).

Nice one Cheri. That explains the age of Aubrey's 'said' mother!

Cherilyn Report 13 May 2013 05:16

Thomas Francis LOBB (d. 1928) was a son of Richard Francis & Charity LOBB (reg 15507). He died aged 64, so born c1864.

Matching birth for him in 'Tari' (Tarilta?), Victoria in 1864, to parents Richard Francis & Charity nee PANALUNA (reg 12084). Also spelled PAULANUNA and PANLANUNA. Both of his older siblings died in infancy. His mother Charity died in 1889 at The Loddon, aged 67, parents unknown Peneluna, mother's given name as Charity (but this could be inaccurate) (reg 6672). His father Richard Francis died in Castlemaine in 1898 aged 85, son of William and Margaret (reg 11378). Arrival in Victoria in 1859 aboard 'Chile' as uynassisted immigrants of Charity LOBB (aged 30) with sons John (11) and Wm (8). FreeBMD has a marriage between Richard LOBB and Charity PENALUNA in Helston, Cornwall in 1845.

The Argus, Tuesday 6 September 1898
LOBB.-On the 4th September at the residence of his son, Muckleford railway station, Richard Francis Lobb, aged 85 years.

Annie Maria LOBB died in 1948 aged 89, at East St Kilda, daughter of Wm ABDERDEEN and Catherine MURPHY (reg 10696) (so the birth Gins found is correct). Annie was the 2nd of 7 children born to Wm & Catherine, who married at St Francis, Melbourne, Victoria in 1851; all had the 2nd or 3rd given name of McKay or Mackay. Most born around The Loddon, Victoria. Her mother Catherine died in Guildford in 1897 aged 67, daughter of Daniel MURPHY & Mary Catherine McCAFFEY (reg 5347). A sad story!:

Bendigo Advertiser, Monday 10 May 1897
OUR COUNTRY SERVICE.
[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS.]
A FATAL ACCIDENT.
CASTLEMAINE, Sunday.
A fatal accident happened on Saturday night to an old resident of Yapeen, Mrs. Catherine Aberdeen, aged 69 years. Deceased had been to Castlemaine with her husband, Mr. W. Aberdeen, to whom she has been married over 50 years. On returning in their spring-cart, Aberdeen pulled up at Smith's hotel, Yapeen, about a mile from their home. As her husband would not come out she said she would wait no longer and drove home by herself. About an hour afterwards Aberdeen walked home, and on entering his yard found his wife lying under the cart, which had pinned her to the ground. In answer to his cries his son-in-law (Mr. George Luke) came to his assistance, lifted the cart and removed Mrs. Aberdeen from under it, when it was found that she was dead.
The Argus, Tuesday 11 May 1897
CASTLEMAINE
An inquiry was held on Monday relative to the death of Mrs Catherine Aberdeen, who met her death at Yapeen on Saturday night through being knocked down by a horse plunging when leaving the shafts of a spring cart. A verdtct of accidental death was returned.

Aubrey is not mentioned in Thos' death notice, from NLA Trove:

The Argus, Tuesday 16 October 1928
LOBB.-On the 13th October (suddenly), at his late residence, Edis street, Kyabram, Thomas Francis, dearly loved husband of Annie, loving father of Richard, Reginald (deceased), Doris (Mrs Thomas), Vera and Cyril aged 64 years. (Inserted by loving wife, family, and G Rodda.)

Doris (Charity) posted a joint death notice with her brother Cyril and his wife, Birdie. In it there is mention of grandchildren of Thomas F., namely Zylda and Leonard, but it is not stated whether these are children of Doris or Cyril (or one of each!). EDIT: her death notice posted above mentions Len so safe to assume Leonard was her son.

Possible death for Les Rupert as Leslie Rupert THOMAS in 1975 aged 76 in Prahran (reg 7793)...if this is him, she found herself a younger fella, good for her! :-D

Cherilyn Report 13 May 2013 04:20

Aubrey Wilfred LOBB was born in 1914 in Carlton, Victoria (Melbourne suburb) but his mother is shown in the index as Charity LOBB, father not stated!!! (reg 20225).

This must be Charity Doris b. 1895 listed above as child of Thomas & Annie Maria. So her parents must have raised him as their own (explains the age difference anyway!). So Mc's hunch was right. Unfortunately this does mean you will most likley not be able to find out who his father was.

Charity Doris [as Charity Dorris] married Les Rupert THOMAS in 1924 (reg 3396). She died in 1947 as Charity Doris THOMAS, aged only 53, daughter of Thomas Francis and Annie Maria McK nee ABERDEEN (reg 11744). You can order an uncertified image of her death certificate online for A$20. It will list all children and details of her marriage (though it will be interesting to see if Aubrey is mentioned!).

EDIT:
The Argus, Thursday 6 November 1947
THOMAS.-On November 3, at her residence, 8 Maitland street. Glen Iris, Charity Doris, beloved wife of Leslie Rupert, loved mother of Len and Nancy, aged 53 years.

Other possible offspring for Thomas and Annie:

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922
Reginald Thomas Lobb 1893 Thomas Francis, Annie MA Castlemaine, Casterton, Victoria
Charity Doris Lobb 1895 Thos Francis, Annie Maria Castlemaine, Victoria
Cyril Lobb 1900 Thos Francis, Annie Mariah Campbells Creek, Victoria

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 11 May 2013 10:42

I have a sneaky suspicion. The names all tie up but the ages don't. The 1919 has a Vera Catherine, this would be her birth:

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922

Name: Vera Cath Lobb
Father's Name: Thos Fran Lobb
Mother's Name: Annie Maria Aberdeen
Birth Place: Castlemaine, Victoria
Registration Year: 1897
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration number: 26952

Although Aubrey's service records say he was born 1914 Melbourne I can't find any birth record. Vera would have been 17 ........

Dea

Dea Report 11 May 2013 10:31

Hang on a minute..........

That marriage DID look good Ginns but you have her birth above as 1859 which would make her 55 when she had Aubrey in 1914 ???

I suppose it is not 'impossible' but it doesn't seem very likely !

Dea Xxx

Oopps - MC - I see you have noticed this also and have added it to your post above

Dea Xxx :-D

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 11 May 2013 10:18

That's a contender Gins - Aubrey Wilfred was born 14 September 1914 in Melbourne.

EDIT: Just noticed Anna Maria's birth year - 1859. That would make her 55 when Aubrey was born. Hmmm?

BarbaraFromYorkshire Report 11 May 2013 10:17

Thats Ok MarieCeleste, no need to say sorry, at least we have the same thoughts on it.

With the marriage details Dea found and the service records you found,(Well done both of you ) it must be the same Aubrey that Diane is looking for.

But not finding much more for her.
