Most of the outward passenger lists did not start until 1890 so you might not find anything

Although the outward passenger lists from the UK didn't start until 1890 the arrival shipping lists in Australia can go back as far as the 1820s, depending on the state.

However, there are just too many John Palmers arriving in the 1860s & 1870s to know which would be him. The Aus arrivals give very little info.

Alan - go to your first post and click "edit", you can then get back to your thread title to edit it. Add the word Australia to it. That way, the Australian researchers who possibly have access to more records may come up with something.
