Thanks Marie. I just wanted to check before you started spending money on certificates that you had made sure that James was the right one as there are one or two around.

Do you know if your James (1910) had any brothers or sisters born from mid 1911 onwards? If he did that might be an easy way of checking his mother's maiden name as the maiden name was recorded on the birth index from then on.

You said somewhere I think that you found your ggdad had 7 siblings and only 5 are showing on 1911.

Thank you all so much for guiding me in the right direction, One thing i know for sure is my James is not from Wigan or Leeds as I been able to follow them both up to 1911 where they are both in their respective places. I am looking at the post from Dea, with the spelling of Tarphe, this looks promising.

You started by asking for James born 1878.
However, on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses that have been posted by Shirley he is born 1872/1873.
Do you know which date (1878 or 1872) is more accurate?

You get certs from www.gro.gov.uk cost £9.25 each with the GRO ref.

You have to register on the site ,free, then follow the order form , you only need to specify what type of cert you want the name and the GRO ref where asked . You must tick the box that asks if the GRO is known .
In the case of a marriage cert you only need to put one of the parties names. Put the info in as its quoted on the ref even if its misspelt

Hi Ann,

This my first week doing this, I haven't even found out how to get a birth certificate yet! can be this be done by email? I do know for sure this is the right one because of the address on the census.

Thank you for your help

It might be as well to start with your g granddad's birth certificate which would confim his parents names. You say you know he was born in 1900 but from both the 1901 & 1911 census he was born in 1901

Births Mar 1901 (>99%)
Tarpey James Manchester 8d 275

I assume you have proved he was the right one from details about his marriage and your grandad's birth

Hi Dea,

I started with my gdad James Tarpey who I know was born 1900. He shows up in both 1901, 9 weeks old and 1911 at 10 yrs old. His dad is named as James, and in 1901 he is 28. After that I can't any birth record.
I'm sure I will get the hang of it.

One thing that has shocked me so far, is that my gdad had 7 siblings that I knew nothing about. If i don't get any further with my search I am now looking for living relatives which is very exciting.

Thank you so much

Hi Marie,

The first and most important thing that you must learn is NEVER to 'assume' that you are following the correct family without proof !

You must start with what you know to be true and work backwards ! ;-)

How have you worked back to this James on the 1901 and have you proved that he is the correct one with certs?

If you want us to check through this for you just post the details.

Good luck!

It may be his birth wasnt registered .there were no penalties before 1875 for non registration .

He may have been Catholic and his parents thought baptism was all that was necessary,
If we have picked up the right James them you need his marriage cert for his dads name as he seems to be the youngest child.
