Find Ancestors

My great grandmother Emily Ellen Witheridge (nee Attrill) was born in the Channel Islands, approx. 1850, as far as I know. I have seen a record somewhere which mentions Jersey, and I have seen a record which mentions Guernsey. It was mentioned to me that perhaps records had to be recorded in one particular place for the Channel islands. However, I have not been able to trace a more accurate record. My grandmother (also Emily Ellen Witheridge was the second of their daughters. Their first daughter also named Emily Ellen died. When my grandmother was born, she was given the same name.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I have the majority of information, however, it's the Jersey records, I.e. my great grandmothers's background I have been noble to find (so frustrating!) thank you for informing me about JerseyLilley. I will try to contact. I will let you know the outcome..

Just noticed the Jersey information from Jan Vera Joseph, thank you all again. I hope to somehow trace living relatives from this information.

I researched my sister-in-laws tree and John Atrill & Rhoda Hockaday are ancestors of hers.

During Victorian times the British Government believed that the French intended to invade England. Forts were built in the Channel Islands as part of our defences. As John Atrill was a Stone Mason by profession, we surmised that he was one of the many workers drafted in to construct the forts.

John & Rhoda had the following children that I know of:

Sarah 1840 Plymouth
Rhoda Jane 1842 Wembury
Hannah 1845 Wembury
John Thomas 1846 Plymouth
Emmeline (or any variation of!) 1849 Jersey CI
Eliza (2) 1852 Jersey CI
Mahala 1854 Alderney CI

The earliest Atrill I could find was Edward (1751-1833).
It would appear that nobody has been able to find out where he was from, although there are a lot of Atrills on the Isle of Wight.

He married Hannah Wadmore in Hampshire, but they settled in Wembury. You can find the baptisms & subsequent marriages of their children on IGI Devon.

Edward was described as a Gentleman and owned property in Devon. I will send you a copy of his Will.

Thank you for this information. Yes, each time I entered my gt grandmothers name, there were many links to the Isle of Wight, but I had difficulty linking to Jersey. I suppose it's a matter of knowing how to do it!
