Find Ancestors

I am helping a friend with her family tree. Her ancestor George Archard is missing from the 1861 census. I found a newspaper article that stated that a George Archard, aged 25, was sentenced to 6 months hard labour in March, 1861. The newspaper article was under the heading "Wilt Assizes". As the census was held in April, 1861 that explains his absence from the family. But I cant find him anywhere else either. I thought I might be able to search by address if I knew the names of prisons back then.
His wife is Jane, born 1831. Her daughter Eliza Norman (from 1st marriage) and son Henry George Archard are with her on the 1861 census in Calne, Wiltshire.
I have searched excessively for George, using only his first name and also looking at Archers, Orchards and Richards and everything in between.
Any ideas most welcome.

I have been unable to find a birth for George Henry ARCHARD, born 1860.
In the 1861 census he is named as Henry George ARCHARD, living in Calne, Wiltshire, aged 9 months and born in Bath Somerset. On the 1871 Census he is living in Yorkshire, under George Archard. He is aged 10 and birth place is given as Calne, Wiltshire (the same birthplace as his father). He is not on any further censuses as he came to Australia in 1878. His name in Australia was George Henry Archard.
His parents Jane Norman and George Archard married in Calne Wiltshire in 1859. This was Jane's second marriage. Her maiden name was Tibble/Tibald/Theobald.
I have searched parish records online where available but havent been able to find a birth for young George.

As, until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births, his probably wasn't recorded

But, as the full names of his parents are known, you aren't missing out on anything other than exact DOB, and precise birth location

For confirmed maiden name info for Jane, purchase the cert of her marriage to Archard. It will name her father (if she knew him)

The birthplace info for the son in 1861 could easily be laziness on the part of the enumerator......he 'dittoed' the girl's birthplace

Thanks Reggie - you are quite right. We know George was born in 1860, just no official recognition of this fact. I was hoping someone might have access to records that I dont have and find him for me. We have the Parish record for Jane's marriage to Peter Norman. Her maiden name was Tibalds. Her Parish christening record however records her surname as Theobalds. And on the 1841 census it is Theobolds.
Her son in Australia on his marriage certificate says her name was Tibble.
I dont think the parents registered George's birth but hopefully they Christened him and eventually a record for this will turn up.
