Hi Valerie

Do any of the burial records give addresses by any chance? It's just ancestry has a military record for Thomas Whitworth (no Welcome mentioned) but there are a couple of discrepancies. Firstly this one was a coal miner, secondly he names father as Thomas, although his mother and brothers are named correctly. The family address was 6 Nelson St, Farnworth when he enlisted 22/1/1914. The stated age ties up, 19y 160 days = dob 14/8/1894.

Thomas Whitworth
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1895
Age at enlistment: 19
Birth Parish: Little Lever
Birth County: Lancashire
Document Year: 1914
Regimental Number: 10681
Regiment Name: Border
Number of images: 14

Incidently, Sarah Bevington/Whitworth was living with the family in 1901 so he may have been close to her? Check your messages, I sent you one of the military images.

Added, I think William Thomas may have been known as Thomas - 1881 census makes no mention of William, he is down as just Thomas.

Hi Flip,

I saw the Welcome T Whitworth on Lancashire bmd but thought nothing of it and just found is baptism on OPC . It was a Private Baptism at St Matthew's Church Little Lever on the 15-08-1894
Received into the Church on Nov 3rd, But can't find nothing else.
I think I would have changed my name if i had been called welcome.
I will try to get his marriage cert next week and see if the information all tie's together

Thank you again for all the hard work
Regards
Valerie :-D

I just wonder if anyone can find anything more on Welcome Thomas Whitworth?? With a name like Welcome, you may be tempted to change it - and he is the right age - and I can't see a death for him in England/Wales.

Is he a likely suspect for your Thomas????

All those in the grave with Sarah Whitworth (d 1909) are infants born locally apart from John buried in 1890 - don't seem to be able to tie him in. Her husband John died between 1881 and 1891 so wonder if it is him, but he died out of the area?? Are there any other details on John's burial?

In the other grave with Lilian, Grace Tonge (d1923) was William Thomas's (d1916) unmarried sister in law ( with them on 1911 census) but haven't checked out the rest.

Still doesn't get you any nearer to your original objective to find your Thomas Whitworth Bevington though. If he was born Whitworth, I just can't understand why he would go back through a couple of generations to re-invent the original Sarah Bevington name? Or even if he was born Bevington, why use the name whitworth?

Emoticons don't work on this laptop but I'd be confused right now!!!

Sorry, but I've had visitors but will look at this again in the morning.

However, John Thomas Sumner was married to Margaret Whitworth (the one I eliminated from previous census) in 1888 (I think from memory) and died aged just 22 - she was with her mother and brother on the subsequent census as a widow with 2 children. She subsequently re-married.

You don't have all John & Sarah's children - there were earlier ones, Robert was the first that I can see (on 1861 census, born Oldham) but I don't have time to find the census at the moment.

Following that 1861 family through, they are the parents of William Thomas who is in that grave.

ADDED; I've followed all the males from the John & Sarah's family, there were quite a few of them by 1871 - and none have a child to match Thomas. Struggling with 2 of the females (Margaret Whitworth can be eliminated ADDED - she is the one who married Sumner) but can't seem to get anything on Mary or Sarah.

Going backwards Sarah & Margaret Bevington's parents were Edward & Jane, who had a number of children from 1822 onwards (lan-opc).

I can't make head nor tail of it either, so you're not on you own Jan!

I can't locate Anna's family either.
Interestingly, an Ancestry tree has a Thomas Whitworth Bevington born 1900 to Joseph Bevington and Annie. No sign of a birth either as far as I can tell. I can't figure them out at all!

hi

sorry for the delay getting back , I have had internet problem's.

I found a death for Lilian Whitworth Bevington on Deceased online she was the daughter of the above Thomas , I have viewed the Grave and she is with Whitworth family member's, I have found the birth's of some Whitworth Children and their mother 's name was either Barrington, Bebington or Bevington her name as been transcribed differently for each child they are registered as Whitworth. I also found the Baptism of William Thomas Whitworth 08-12-1872 St John the Evangelist church Farnworth, Parent's John and Sarah William is in the grave with Lilian

Is it possible they might be in the census record's as Whitworth's.

That 1911 census posted by Jan, showing mother Anna a widow is interesting. I can't see a birth for any of those children in Bolton. Also, Anna states married 21 years (3 children) but there is no sign of a marriage for her that I can see. Can't seem to be able to locate this family in 1901.

I just wonder if Thomas was actually born Whitworth and not Bevington, but for some reason took on the name Bevington. Have looked for a Whitworth/Bevington marriage but not seeing one - maybe his mother lived with a Mr Bevington and changed their name?
