Hello Nicola, the way to tell if a message has been read is to go to Sent Messages (under Messages on the menu above) - if the message you sent still has a green envelope next to it then it hasn't been opened by the recipient, if there's no envelope then it has been read.

There are a number of reasons why you might not get replies to messages, so don't take it personally if people don't respond!

- a lot of people join sites like this full of enthusiasm but when they start reaching brick walls or realise they need to spend money buying certificates they drift away

- they haven't kept an up to date email address on their Genes account so aren't receiving notification of messages

- they may no longer be alive. If someone died and no subscription was received their account would revert to free membership so their tree would remain. Their next of kin may not even know about their Genes account or know how to access it.

- it depends what your message said. Never use the pre-formatted messages that GR offer when you're contacting someone. Always put your own message stating who you are researching and what your connection is, people will be more inclined to share their research.

But, it's early days and some people may just be occasional users and will reply when their commitments permit.

Reggis, No I don't believe the messages have been opened but I'm not certain as I don't know how to tell if they have been opened or not.

As you only joined GR this month, you can't have been waiting long for replies to contact messages.............be patient. Some people don't look at their e-mails very often

Have the messages you sent been opened?

I am looking for my Uk Relatives.

Family name is Cain. Edward 1910 married to Celia Cain nee Aldersley 1913, Malcolm 1937, Rodney 1943, Mark 1960, Michael 1962, Rebecca 1987. Spouses of the Cain family are: Heidemarie Cain nee Wilson 1935? divorced from Malcolm, Lynda Cain nee Wozencroft 1962?.

Any branch of the Cain family that have information regarding this family or possible contact information would be greatly appreciated. I have searched electoral rolls with some sucess but have not received any emails from my requests to view family trees etc to confirm I have the correct family.
