Patricia Report 3 Jul 2013 17:12

I am trying to find information on Emily Dick I have found a baptism record giving date of baptism as 22 March 1863, place Croydon common St James, her parents arer shown as James Dick and Jane Deighton, 1871 Census shows Emily as the daughter of James and Maria Dick (James parents) 1881 Census shows Emily as living with James and Maria but she is now their Granddaughter,
I know mistakes often happen in Census records. I then cannot find any more rercords except a possible marriage to Albert Lines in April 1881, but her father is now given as George, have tried sending for a birth certificate but the only possible one I could find shows a John Dick and Jane Shepherd as parents. If anybody could help me to untangle this relation I would be very grateful.

If James Dick was a minor in age on marriage in 1862 then he cant be the same James with wife Maria on the 1871 who was aged 50.

But then you have found her later as grandaughter to them that seems more likely.

Jane was of full age on the marriage cert so over 21 and a spinster

I have the marriage certificate of James Dick and Maria Russell, he is given as of full age and a widower, I have not been able to find any details of his previous marriage.

Andrew

Andrew Report 3 Jul 2013 17:44

The address on 1881 census agrees with the marriage for Emily to Albert Lines, also the occupation for father 'George' is Engine Driver' which agrees with the 1862 marriage for James and Jane.

If her dad did die in 1865 she would have been very young so may not have known his name.

She may have said George when she married just so it didnt look like she had no dad. These things did happen then people did a lot of face saving when they didnt have facts

Rambling Rose is right this is Jane Deighton nee Jane Dick who I am trying to establish as Emily's mother .
Regarding her father James did not die untill 1913, although Mum died in 1875 father moved away, resulting in younger brother s William and Henry going to the workhouse/Industrial School.
