Charles Corby 1766

Graham Report 7 Jul 2013 17:08

I have the marriage of my G/G/G/Grandfather Charles Corby to Sarah Brown 1773 in St. Michael's Church, Coventry on 8 Oct 1793. I also have them and their nine children in the 1841 Census. However, I am unable to find his or his wife's place of birth..
From Charles I have extensive records, but one of the problems with Coventry Parish records is that many were lost in the Blitz of November 1940.
I would be over the moon if anyone can help me find the missing information.

Hi Tom,
Sorry for confusing you, I was trying to answer a couple of feedbacks at the same time. Benjamin Abt 1785 s the Father of Benjamin 1811. I am also stuck on Charles Corby, my Mother's line and I mixed them up.

Graham Report 9 Jul 2013 00:54

Hi Ann and Cynthia.,
Thanks for all the info, I will try and get through it tomorrow, though I have my sister visiting us this week before emigrating to NZ, so I will probably never see her again.
I appreciate the dates of Charles and Sarah's christenings, though I have another two children listed for them Henry 1816 and John 1819.
I am not sure which thread you state I have not responded to, please advise.
You also refer to Bishop's transcripts for St Michael's Church, where can I call them up ?
As you have found the christening of Sarah Brown at St Michael's, it could resolve one of my problems. As I have been unable to find her or her husband Charles place and DOB I thought they may have moved into Coventryto live after being born somewhere alse.

Best Regars and many thanks

Graham

Hi Ann and Cynthia,

Re Charles Corby Abt 1766

I have tried to follow your suggested lines of research but I am afraid I have been unable to make any progress. I am a little new to this type of research and would appreciate a bit of advice on how to follow up your advice.

Best Regards

Graham

Death - 14 April 1861, Coventry, Warks.

PARISH RECORDS, FOR ST.MICHAEL'S ARE HELD AT THE COVENTRY ARCHIVES, IN THE WARWICK RECORD OFFICE. WHERE THERE ARE GAPS IN THE COVENTRY HOLDINGS THEY CAN USUALLY BE FOUND AT WARWICK. www.covfhs.org/research-aids/parish-/registers.html

There is a record of the Bishop's Transcripts for St Michael's 1640-1726 by the authors Tidesley, Norman W,
Microfilm 0198761.

Entered in the Death's Index for June 1861 is a Charles Corby of Coventry @ 6d 245/279. ( and 6d 205) ?
Also in the same page is recorded a Caroline Corby, Coventry, @ 6d 240. ( and 6d 220) ?
There is another entry for Charles Corby in Sep 1864 @ 6d 279

Knowing the ages are ‘rounded down’ for adults on the 1841 Census working backwards to the date of the marriage to Sarah, as recorded in St Michael’s Parish Records, Coventry. The 60 against Charles’s name means he could have been aged any where between 60 and 64yrs in June 1841. The 70 against Sarah’s name means she could have been aged anywhere between 70 and 74 yrs. In order to ‘fit’ these into what we know of ‘our’ Charles and Sarah i.e. their wedding was in Oct 1793, we would need to assume Charles was 64 at the time of the census in 1841. Sarah’s exact age at the time of the Census is not so critical. OK, so working back with this info., it would suggest that if the Charles of the Census is ‘our’ man and his dob was 1733 which some researchers have, he would have been just 16 or 17 in Oct 1793. If we take his dob as 1767 it would make his age at marriage 22/23 which seems more realistic. Sarah could have been about 22, if we take 70 as her ‘real’ age in 1841.
