Pleased you're enjoying it Emma - this one has been great fun!

Going back to Alexandrina, it turns out there are several Alexandrina Bains in Australia so have to be careful not to mix them up.

However, Vaucluse keeps popping up so wonder if this is her?

Australia, Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980
Name: Alexandrina Bain
Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1930
State: New South Wales
District: Wentworth
Subdistrict: Vaucluse

Address is Greycliffe Hospital and occupation "Home Duties".

If this IS her then it confirms she and Arthur not married at this time. The Australia ERs are listed by name not address so need to find where he was.

On the July 1929 passenger list Alexandrina is recorded as born 1900, London.

This is the only record I can find for those names BUT it needs to be proven.

Cherilyn, I don't know much about Australian certificate - what information would the death certs of Arthur and Alexandrina provide?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2013 13:25

I think these dates are significant:

In July 1929 he arrives in California with Alexandrina and infant Arthur Lincoln, purpose is business trip, intended duration 90 days before returning to Sydney.

On 10th October 1929 he arrives in England alone and then on 22 October he returns alone to New York on a trip noted as in transit to Sydney.

I note he had two books published c1928 so perhaps the need to travel and the pressures involved with his work put a strain on the marriage?

I think the reason he was still included on the London ER was that as the householder he would have been eligible to vote had he been there.

Ah good work MC :-)

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2013 13:10

I've worked out that Margaret May didn't die so she and Arthur Osmond must have split up, probably some time in the late 1920s.

She's still in the family home in 1935, by which time Arthur is settled in Australia with his new "wife".

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

Name: Margaret May Richardson
Year: 1935
County or Borough: Wandsworth
Ward or Division/Constituency: Clapham and Streatham
Street Address: 12 Christchurch Road.

There's now no mention of Arthur at this address but son Colin Arthur Richardson is now listed as he'd be old enough to vote.

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2013 12:48

Norman Alan was on the 1931 census in London:

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

Name: Norman Alan Richardson
Year: 1931
County or Borough: Wandsworth
Ward or Division/Constituency: Putney, Streatham and Central
Street Address: Christchurch Road

He's listed with Arthur Osmond and Margaret May Richardson
..............................................................................................................

In 1932 he left England, shipping list says he intended to reside Australia:

UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960

Name: Mr Norman Richardson
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Birth Date: abt 1911
Departure Date: 3 Feb 1932
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Destination Port: Sydney, Australia
Ship Name: Moreton Bay
Shipping Line: Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line
Official Number: 130169
Master: W G Summers

He's a clerk, address 12 Christchurch Road, SW2
.................................................................................................................

It's interesting that in 1954 he's in Vaucluse, the same area his father was with Alexandrina

Australia, Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980
Name: Norman Alan Richardson
Gender: Male
Electoral Year: 1954
State: New South Wales
District: Wentworth
Subdistrict: Vaucluse

An executive living 47 Wentworth Road with Noelle Monteith Richardson.

Cherilyn Report 4 Aug 2013 10:36

Interesting...there is a Noelle Monteith-Nahr listed in NSW Electoral Roll in 1936 in Wentworth district!

From Papers Past (NZ):

Evening Post, Volume XCIV, Issue 38, 14 August 1917, Page 9
WOMEN IN PRINT.
Mrs. Monteith Nahr and her daughter Noelle, accompanied by Miss Marion Monteith, who are leaving for Sydney shortly, are at present staying at the Royal Oak Hotel.

Her mother's death in NSW?

20031/1960 NAHR MARTHA MONTEITH [father] STEWART [mother] ELIZABETH [place] SYDNEY

From newspapers, her mother was Elizabeth MONTEITH and she died in 1936 in NSW. The family is detailed here:
freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~peterd50/mahony/pafmahony/pafg02.htm

Noelle's father, Edmund/Edward Charles NAHR (born NZ, 1882, son of Wm & Rachel) was as a brewer, as were his father and brothers; he died young of heart disease: public.bullerdc.govt.nz/cgi-bin/cemetery/cepp?key=006624

One of the Margaret May THOMAS' was born in 1880 in Sandhurst, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (nee EDDY) (reg 24975). Seems to fit age on passenger lists.

As I say I think the marriage cert needs to be the next step to make sure you are on the right track.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2013 10:21

Looking at the passenger lists the US arrivals all seem to be "in transit" between England and Australia, perhaps that was his preferred route - maybe stopping off to conduct some business en route? There's nothing on them to suggest that he stayed in USA more than a week or so (I guess that would be long enough to get married though?).

Re: the 1930 London ER - I've come across people listed on the ER the year after they died so it's possible that when it's published the info is a bit out of date.

Cherilyn Report 4 Aug 2013 10:19

I wonder...

Marriages Dec 1939 (>99%)

Maybe he married in the UK while serving in WWII? His service record would have a copy of the marriage detais if he did. You can request it to be digitised as NAA Recordsearch.

:-D

PS Just noticed he enlisted in Paddington NSW! How funny!

PPS Do you know Colin's wife's name or when/where he married? Possible in 1939 Paddington (London) to an Ivy SINCLAIR, see FreeBMD.

Cherilyn Report 4 Aug 2013 09:52

Hmm just occurs to me that if it was Margaret he left behind in London in 1922, then the son Arthur Lincoln must have been born not long after, because he married in SA in 1948. He is described as the 'elder son'.

???

Okay had another look and he was with Margaret in London in 1920, went to the US in 1922, then had a son Arthur Lincoln with Alexandrina in approx Jan 1928, and travelled with Alexandrina and baby Arthur in mid-1929. Did he marry her in the US? No marriage found in NSW.

BUT then he is found with Margaret in London electoral rolls in 1930...so there must be two different men here? Though he shown as is a journalist...!

I think his Vic marriage certificate to Margaret is required, Emma - it can be downloaded as an uncertified image (pdf) online for A$20, would tell you his birthplace, age and parents. Just Google 'Victoria bdm uncertified image'.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2013 09:50

At first I was starting to wonder if they were two different men but the passenger lists seem to tie everything together with the various addresses.

Thanks MC, wasn't sure whether to poke my nose in or not!

I was a bit unsure if we had 2 AOR's here, but they do seem to be the same chap...do you think?

Still looking for Margt's death or a marriage to Alexandrina
