That seems to support the idea that one of William & Annie's deceased children was the George Elphick who died in 1907, and that therefore Patricia has got the wrong birth for "her" George.

Can't see why one child would be sent away when the others are at home? The husband is on ship, a fireman

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Aug 2013 09:39

Hi, Gins -
That may be the baptism of the child who died in 1907.
Birth registration seems rather late, but that's the only George Elphick birth in Greenwich in 1904.

Gee

Gee Report 24 Aug 2013 09:35

So would this be his baptism?

If she means the 1904 Greenwich birth posted 21 Aug, 17:06, it appears not to be the correct one, because of the death in 1907.

And perhaps he was sent from Liverpool, not Glasgow, as the same list of children is given for both embarkation ports.

patchem Report 24 Aug 2013 09:13

Patricia does not state that he was born in Glasgow, just that he was sent from there.
He is born in Greenwich in her tree on here.

PM below received from Patricia. Have advised her how to add any further thoughts to the thread, rather than by PM:-

Thank you so much for your help. I will look into this.

Just to clarify, the Sicilian left Glasgow 24 Feb 1911 and then went on to Liverpool where it would have picked up more passengers before starting it's crossing 25 Feb.

It arrived in Halifax NS on 9 March and final disembarkation was Portland on 11 March. Passengers often recorded at each port.

What info do you have on your Aunt.

There are records for George Elphick and Gordon in 1949 in Hamilton east Ontario,George is a Shipper and Gordon in the Air Force.

George a labourer alone in 1940 and in 1958 a messenger and 1965 a messenger with Mrs Kate Elphick.

Kate Elphick is on her own in 1972 as housewife.

Maybe not relevant, but in case it is, this may perhaps be the father of the George Elphick married in 1926.
This is the only feasible one in 1901 (there are none in Scotland). Do any of these names mean anything to you, Patricia?

The two sailing records - arrivals 9th March 1911 and 11 March 1911 - give the same list of Barnardo's children. Very odd - same ship but different ports of departure and different destinations.

ScotlandsPeople does not list a birth of any George Elphick (or variation) - in fact, no Elphick at all - anywhere in Scotland 1900-1910.

Is your information from an official source? Have you found any online record of him?

I am looking for my aunt's step brother (aunt died 1998). He was sent by Dr Banardos
to Canada in 1911 (born in 1904) from Glasgow to Halifax, on the Scilian. I think he went to Toronto,
and I know he had a son Gordon, but have no other details.
