Find Ancestors

Hi, have really hit brick wall with this one :-(, and any help or advise would be greatly appreciated :-). Here is what I know: John Pierpont ( there is different spellings of the surname) born 1816 in South Muskham, Nottinghamshire. He married Elizabeth smith (born 1817 in east Leake). They had 9 children. John's mother was Elizabeth but I am struggling to find anymore information as in fathers name. I have tried church records etc but can come up with nothing. Thanks Mark

If his mother's name is on the christening record but not his father's then he is most definitely illegitimate.

Thanks for the replies, if he was illegitimate does this mean the end of my search or can information (as in a the father) be found for a legitimate child?

if he was illegitimate the chances of finding the father are remote I would have thought

St Wilfrid's Church is the parish church of South Muskham - they may have registers, or try the local Family History Society

Did Elizabeth PIERPONT marry?
If this was soon after John's birth, there is a possibility that she married his father.

Sometimes the original baptism record might name a father, ...or one that the vicar suspects to be so.
I have seen a baptism register where every illegitimate child baptised has a father's name shown.

Thanks for the information, I may have found John's mother Elizabeth after a lot of researching and talking to various people today:

Mother: Ann Ward born 1769

Unfortunately I cannot find Johns father.
