I wondered if anyone can give me any ideas
in 1926 my mum aged 10yrs. went with her aunt to Australia on a boat
I would have thought her husband would have gone over first to find a job but cannot find anything for him
were there any other forms of transport he could have gone on
thanks for any help :-(

are there any lists of people coming back to England, my mum went over there aged 10 in 1926 but came back before 1940 but I don't know where to look for any info on that

Do you know if your mum married when she came back?

jax

jax Report 20 Sep 2013 15:09

The marriage was in the UK 1944

So she must have come back before then

Flip

Flip Report 20 Sep 2013 15:16

Jax, I asked because there is no obvious incoming passenger listing for her on ancestry, wonder if there is something on FMP?

Was the marriage in Leeds?

Flip

Flip Report 20 Sep 2013 15:32

I guess it is, she was married under two names, Roper and Johns. But nothing obvious for her coming back under the name of Johns either.

Carol

Carol Report 20 Sep 2013 21:36

I have her marriage certificate to tom johns in 1937 in england, her maiden name was roper that is why we know she was back in England then, they were divorced in 1944 and she remarried then

Flip Report 20 Sep 2013 22:31

Ancestry has UK incoming passenger lists, but she is not showing up under the name Gladys Roper - sorry just can't see her coming back. Though obviously she must have at some point, I tried looking under Hirst as well just in case the passage was booked in that name, but nothing.
