Could this be George Goerk ???

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 17 Sep 2013 01:17

Might this be George travelling by himself? There are no other Georkes transcribed on the manifest

GOERKE, George
Ship/aircraft name Otranto

Port of embarkation London
Port of disembarkation Sydney
Date of arrival 08 Feb 1927

From National Archives of Australia Passenger arrivals index, 1921-1949

On second thoughts perhaps not, unless he had been back to the UK for a visit. The 1925 ER find suggests he arrived before then.

Could be MC. Strange though that he doesn't re-appear on the ERs.

I'm thinking that they moved to NSW very soon after that newspaper article ......

Oh, well found MarieCeleste!

From the information available, it looks like they first stayed in Western Australia. Guess they moved to New South Wales but George seems to have returned to W.A.

The Police Gazette issues were in N.S.W. so may be difficult to know who left who? Only seeing Ethel on her own on the N.S.W. ERs.

Found a newspaper article possibly about Ethel's husband:

The Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 - 1950) Saturday 31 January 1925

"Breach of Traffic Act.— George Goerk appeared before Mr. H. J. Crais, R.M., at the Fremantle Police Court this morning charged with unlawfully assuming control of a motor cycle, the property of Leonard Mayfield, contrary to the Traffic Act, Accused, for whom Mr. F. G. Unmack appeared, pleaded not guilty. The evidence for the prosecution showed that, accused took the motor cycle from outside the Freemasons' Hotel last night without the consent of the owner. He mounted the machine and after travelling a few yards fell off. In the presence of a constable and the owner of the cycle, accused claimed that the cycle belonged to him. He was under the influence of liquor. Mr. Unmack did not call any evidence for the defence, but stated that the accused was 'silly drunk' last night and incapable of knowing what he was doing. Accused had not been in trouble previously. The R.M. said there was no doubt that accused unlawfully assumed control of the cycle. He would be fined 50s with 15s costs."

There's a possible marriage of an Ethel Heathcote to George Goerk...if all else fails it might be worth trying to eliminate this one, or see if she emigrated under married name?
