Jacki,

I think you have the death certificate of my paternal grandfather. My father's name is Benjamin (Benny) O'Neill, his parents were never married. His father was definitley a Benjamin (Ben) Terrell, born in Bermondsey, he had an Irish Father and a Spanish mother; well according to my dad, whose memory is not great. He died aged 63 in Northampton, whilst living at my parents house (15 Melville Street). My dad's s mother was Nellie O'Neill, born in County Mayo, but moved to London as small child; this might be the Nellie you were talking of.
Ben, at some point moved to Stepney, and I know he joined the army in World War I, underage, as he wanted 3 square meals a day. He then went on to serve in India, were he caught malaria; which returned in his final days.
Ben had a family, prior to getting together with Nellie, this was with a lady called "Betty Crocker"; is she related to the Crockers in Bermondsey? The split was not a happy one, and as far as I'm aware Ben and his subsequent children were banned from seeing the younger children of the first family. However, the two eldest sons came to visit, until they lost their lives in WWII. I can only remember the name of the eldest he was Eugene, who died in the D-Day landings; dad is not sure which parent's surname he went under.
Ben was apparently a colourful character, he liked his drink and had been known to run out money for the Sally Army Hostel, he also managed to run a pie-shop that he lost in the blitz.
My dad was born in 1936, although Ben was not recorded as the father on the birth certificate. They family moved around a bit, dad was evacuated to Northampton, then Hinkley. At some point he came back to London, then the whole family (Ben, Nellie, Benny, his brothers John and Leslie) ended up moving around the east midlands. At some point they ended up in London, but separated. Nellie and John lived in Elephant and Castle, Ben lived in Stepney, Benny and Leslie bounced between the two and ended up in Barnardos. There was also a sister, dad never said her name, who died at the age of two, when my dad was five; they both had diptheria, she never returned home.
The family's recording of life events was a bit shady, this might explain some confusion with Nellie. For example, my parents marriage certificate has father as "Benjamin O'Neill", but "Benjamin Terrell" as a witness. My uncle Les has "Benjamin O'Neill" as the father, though we know they were just trying to cover up his illegitimacy.
In about 1946 Ben & Benny moved to Northampton. Firstly in the town centre, and then in a small village called Spratton. They were lucky enough to be given a new council there, 55 Sandhills. Les joined them, when he was 11, as Barnardos would not release him into his dad's custody, until that age. As far as I'm aware my dad and Les only saw Nellie a couple of times after that, it wasn't a happy relationship, she died in her early 60s, but I have no details.
Ben lived in Spratton until March 1962, when he moved himself into my parents marital home, whilst they were away on honeymoon. Fortunately, my mum was prepared to cook him his cockney favourites, such as pigs-trotters and pour him the odd beer. I do have some pictures of Ben, he's on my parents wedding photos and I have a worn one with his work colleagues (he worked as a decorator for many years).
Les died in 2002, at which point I had the only was the only contact I had with John since I was two.
I hope that this is the information you are after, and would be even happier to find out if we're related.
.Elaine
