Thanks Detective. I will take a look at the bundesarchiv.de link. The Stasi files sound interesting. The tip for the Ango-German FHS is brilliant. Thank you.

Thanks Reggie - I've tried familysearch.org to no avail. Nothing on either Hugo or Maria.

Have you thought of joining an Anglo-German FHS? They may be able to point you in the direction for records.

'Berlin Archives' throws up a whole range of Archives. The Federal Archive site says that BMD registrations are held by the local registry offices.

Although things may have changed, Archives prefer to be written to in German. In many instances, they need to know your relationship.

If they have been indexed and survive, you might be able to track down Hugo's Stasi file - be prepared for a can of worms.

Dear All,

Could anyone give me some tips for how to research a German branch of my family? Are there online sources? I'm looking for BMD info and also cemetery information. Preliminary searches will be in the area of Berlin (ex East).

One particular person of interest is:

Hugo Preuss (not the famous polititican whom I have found via google searches - my Hugo was a musician - a "Kappellmeister")

Born: 10 May 1896 (probably in the East Berlin area)
Died: 5 Sep 1970 (probably in the East Berlin area)

Hugo was married to Maria Novisky (probably born in Poland). I have a photo of Hugo's headstone and I know that Maria was buried next to him, however I do not know which graveyard. I would be very interested to find that out.

Hugo and Maria had 3 children: Erika, Joachim and another daughter (name unknown).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Rebecca
