Have you looked for/found the man's first marriage?

You say it was 'about' 1900.....................freebmd should give you accurate info

ErikaH Report 26 Jan 2014 14:19

Not sure what you mean by this........

(christened Wilson on the birth certificate)

Baptism and birth registration are separate events

Under what surname was Martha's birth registered?

It may be he separated from his first wife so wasnt free to remarry ' Divorce was very costly to get in those days and only had specific reasons for a divorce to be granted most usual was adultery that had to be admitted .

Bryn Report 26 Jan 2014 14:09

I have been trying to find the marriage of my Great Grand parents and seem to have hit a brick wall.

Evan Thomas Hughes born 20/06/1877, died 28/12/1927 in Whitby married Martha Higgins (christened Wilson on the birth certificate) born 15/09/1880, died 21/03/1945. DOM abt 1909.

I found a marriage certificate for a Evan Thomas Hughes and Martha Higgins on 26/11/1914. Unfortunately this Martha is too young and her parents names are incorrect.

This was Evan Thomas Hughes 2nd marriage, he previously wed Alice Ann Rhodes born 1881 abt 1900 in Holywell, Flintshire. They had 2 sons, Evan Hubert 1903 - 1966 and Edward born 1901. I am not aware of what happened to Alice Rhodes.

Evan had a further 6 daughters with Martha Higgins. I also believe Martha may have had a son out of wedlock as I have traced a Alfred Higgins Wilson born to a Martha Wilson on 27/10/1907 and he was on the 1911 census listed as the grandson of Henry Higgins who I believe was the step father of Martha.

Hopefully this all makes sense as it took quite a bit of investigation to get this far.

As I stated above I can only find one marriage between an Evan Thomas Hughes and a Martha Higgins so wonder if anyone has any other ideas. It did cross my mind that they may not have married.

Thanks Bryn
