Henry Powell, born Walsall, c. 1857

My great grandfather is proving to be very elusive to trace. According to the 1881 Census he was born in Walsall, aged 23, living in Workington, Cumberland.
He was married in August 1879 in Workington, Cumberland. His father is named as Henry Powell, a silversmith, deceased.
He died December 1888, aged 31, in Workington, Cumberland.
I have tried various Henrys who might have been him but proved not to be so.
Until I get his birth certificate I cannot trace his line further back.
Can anyone out there help, please?

As there were no penalties for not registering births until 1875, you may never find one

have you looked for a baptism?

Joan

Joan Report 15 Apr 2014 23:38

I have tried to find a baptism but can only do this online as I live in Cumbria.

The trouble is I can't find him on the '61 or '71 Census either.

The 1881 records his birthplace as 'Walsall, Warwickshire'.................one of which is not correct.

As his deceased father had been a silversmith, one has to wonder whether in fact he was born nearer to Birmingham.............................just a thought

Who witnessed the marriage?

And what was his recorded age?

I realised that Walsall and Staffordshire did not match up, but wondered if at that time perhaps Walsall was said to be in Staffordshire.
I have also considered the possibility that the father's name was not Henry but was written as that by mistake after the Henry getting married.
He was married in August 1879, aged 22 to Jane Burrow, aged 21 in Workington, Cumberland. He made his mark but Jane signed her name.
The witnesses were John Taylor and Mary Burrow, Jane's sister.
I have no idea when his father died.

Sorry Reggie.

I made an error when I replied to you. I meant to say I realised Walsall and Warwickshire didn't match up.

I have trawled through umpteen Henrys from the Birmingham area also. I haven't come across anyone yet that I find might be correct.

I did try to find a Powell who was a silversmith on the 1851 Census but couldn't find one. I thought it might have given me a different Christian name but worth following up.

I have been searching for him on and off for years now. That line of the family is in limbo.
