I might be clutching at straws here.........

Gemma states on her tree that Francis had a brother Henry who was baptised at the same time.

Could this possibly Francis as Frank with brother Henry...

You have probably viewed it already but.........

A tree on Ancestry has the parents of Francis Albert as....

Henry Charles Cox 1879 Cork Ireland and Louisa Brindle 1879 Brighton

They didn't marry until 1917...

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005
about Louisa Brindle Name:Louisa Brindle
Spouse Name: Henry Cox
Date of Registration:Jul-Aug-Sep 1917
Registration district:Portsmouth
Inferred County:Southampton
Volume Number:2b
Page Number:1016

Perhaps that is why Francis's mothers name was not on the birth cert?

Oddly........Louisa Brindle appears as a servant on the 1901 census and then there is no sign of her on the 1911 as Brindle or Cox.

It's a shame that we can't seem to find Francis Albert on the 1911 census.

Sooo maybe Henry, Louisa and Francis are together somewhere.........but where?

Astra Report 6 Jun 2014 11:51

I just found a tree on Ancestry that has details of the Grainger/Cox family. They married in 1946 but began having children in 1934

His father Henry Charles Cox born 1879 Ireland
Mother Louisa Brindle born 1879 Brighton

Married in 1917!

In 1911 Louisa is in the Workhouse in Portsmouth with a daughter Eileen but there is no sign of a Francis.

Chris, I appear to have posted on there last year-yes that was me. At that time I hadn't ordered the certificate.

Gemma

Gemma Report 6 Jun 2014 11:41

She was born in 1907 in Itchenor, West Sussex

Gemma Report 6 Jun 2014 11:40

The marriage certificate was ordered via the GRO. Doesn't give a dob. Just says 1904. Doesn't give a place of birth, but I remember seeing something at West Sussex records office saying Southampton birth. Father on certificate was Henry Cox, basket weaver. Doesn't give a mothers name. I did, however then decide to contact the Southampton archives who provided a date of birth, a baptism date and a potential mother, Louisa. They are just guesses on my ancestry tree. Would love to be able to confirm everything, but with nothing much on the marriage certificate it's not helpful. It is possible that he remarried, which is why I'm hoping there is someone on here that is descended from him through another marriage, as my great nan only had one child.
I was very young when my great nan and nan died. Can remember my great nan never left her bed. My nan died in London. Last time I saw her was in hospital and she had some toys for me and my sister. Sadly my younger siblings never got the chance to meet them. Strange the things you remember. Still haven't met anyone that beats my late nans cheesy mash!

You could do with getting the actual marriage certificate, rather than just the bmd index to see who his father was and what his age was - that way we may be able to confirm the correct birth.

Added: but I see this has already been suggested.

Am looking for more on Francis Albert Cox. He was my great grandad. He was born in 1904 possibly in Southampton and married my great nan, Annie Ainger, in around 1931 in West Sussex (have been unable to find the church as the certificate just says Westhampnett district). My great nan and my nan (Babara Eileen Vivien Cox) died around 1992, within a very short time of each other. We know he carried on working in Chichester at the bus station, but he supposedly ran off with another woman. Would love to know where he went, whether he had any other children, got remarried etc as have been unable to find a divorce record etc.
He was a kitchen porter and then a chef, presumably the same cafe/restaurant. Possibly the same one as my great nan worked in.
They lived in Brightview Cottage in Wittering. For some reason, around the time that he ran off, the family purchased the cottage. Maybe the 2 were connected somehow? Would be great to find out. The West Sussex records office doesnt have much on him.
