I am trying to discover the surname of a WILLIAM PARKER born c1790 Bristol Gloucestershire who married HARRIET (surname unknown) born c1796 at St Werburgh Derby Derbyshire. They are present in the 1841 and 1851 census and had numerous children in Derby but, I am unable to find their marriage.
Can anyone help please

Thanks for the details of the above marriage in 1829. In the 1841 and 1851 census returns they have a son who was born (Edwin) c1823 St Werburg Derby. This leads me to 2 thoughts.
(1) That they may have had children out of wedlock but that seems unlikely because they had other children born c1819 upwards in St Werburg Derby.
(2) Did William Parker marry twice and that Harriet shown in the 1841/1851 census returns was his 2nd wife?
The 2nd seems possible but again I am unable to establish what is fact and what is assumption.

Edwin could also have been Harriet's child ................ that marriage does say she was a widow!

Yes, that is another possibility and makes sense..
Yes , that is the family in the 1851 census which clearly states William originated in Bristol. That in itself poses another question. Why did William move from Bristol to Derby. Was it with his family? Was it because of his work? I will look further into the marriage to Harriet Riggott which as you say could be the answer.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Aug 2014 06:31

William probably moved "for work"

It could have been to apprentice with someone, or after he finished his apprenticeship because there was an opportunity "up north" rather than in Gloucestershire ...............

our ancestors did move around much much more than we think they did!

As harriet who married 1829 was a widow, it's entirely possible that the man she married was also in that situation

relationships on censuses (not recorded in1841) are to the head of the family. Edwin and Emma may well not have been harriet's children

Isn't there someone on here with a thread offering lookups for Derbyshire PR's?
(I'm pretty sure I've seen one)

As William didn't marry Harriet till 1829 maybe Williams first wife was also a Harriet

Name: Edwin Parker
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 18 Jul 1819
Christening Place: SAINT PETER,DERBY,DERBY,ENGLAND
Father's Name: William Parker
Mother's Name: Harriet
