Helen added a message to an old thread about a different Craddock family

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1266909

'I have a Henry Craddock born about 1841 who lived in Scotland . Was born in England but lived in Scotland after he retired from the army.He was my great grandfather. He is supposed to hav a brother but nobody in the family knows anything about him.'

and I have done a little digging around for her Henry and said I would post it here for her
_____________________________________________

this is Henry in 1881 in England
you can see this census here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQHX-WYS

Name: Henry Craddock
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Agnes Craddock
Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Civil Parish: Brenenden
County/Island: Kent
Occupation: Sergt Instr Volur (Army Pensioner)
Registration district: Cranbrook

Henry Craddock 40
Agnes Craddock 23
Eliza M. Craddock 3
Henry A. Craddock 1
_____________________________________________

and this is the family in 1891 in Scotland

Name: Henry Craddock
Age: 49
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Agnes Craddock
Where born: England
Registration district: Irvine
Civil Parish: Irvine
Town: Irvine
County: Ayrshire
Address: 20 Friars Croft
Occupation: Clerk Timber Merchant

Henry Craddock 49
Agnes Craddock 32 born in Glasgow
Henry A Craddock 11
Ernest R Craddock 9
Alfred W Craddock 6
Lillian A Craddock 5
Minna J Craddock 2
James S Craddock 10 Mo
____________________________________________

this is their marriage

Marriages Jun 1876
Craddock Henry Farnham 2a 116
Richmond Agnes Farnham 2a 116

(Farnham would be because Henry was in the military; possibly Agnes' father was posted there too)

the marriage certificate would show whether Henry named his father when he married, and with his father's name he could be searched for in early censuses
_____________________________________________

but ... this is what I am wondering ... if Henry wasn't quite sure where he was born, or generalized his place of birth to a big city as many people did ... Harborne is not 5 miles from Birmingham

1841 in Harborne Staffordshire
you can see his record in this census here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQTS-NSY

Name: Henry Craddock
Age: 5 Mo
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Gender: Male
Where born: Staffordshire, England
Civil Parish: Harborne
County/Island: Staffordshire
Registration district: Kings Norton

Hannah Mooley 45
John Craddock 65
Jane Craddock 20
Mary Craddock 65
Henry Craddock 5 Mo

(the image is very difficult to read at Ancestry)

so it's quite likely that Henry was the son of Jane, who wasn't married

there is a possible death for a Jane Craddock in Kings Norton reg dist in 1848, also a marriage in early 1851
_____________________________________________

and then in 1851

Name: Henry Cradock
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Relation: Pauper
Gender: Male
Where born: Herrbon, Worcestershire, England (Harborne)
Civil Parish: Kings Norton
County/Island: Worcestershire
Registration district: Kings Norton

Henry Cradock 9
> Alfred Cradock 7
(and many other people, it is the Union Workhouse)

it would be very common that an orphaned boy who was taken into the workhouse would join the military as your Henry did
_____________________________________________

Births Sep 1843
CRADDOCK Alfred Kings Norton 18 402

this could be Henry's brother you have heard about

Kings Norton reg dist covers both Harborne and Smethwick
_____________________________________________

I wonder whether this is Alfred in 1861
you can see his record at:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7Y9-BFD

Name: Alfred Craddock
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: 1845
Relation: Boy 2 C (Boy)
Gender: Male
Where born: Smethwick, Staffordshire, England (also very near Birmingham)
Civil Parish: Vessels
Town: Beirut Syria
County/Island: Royal Navy
Registration district: Royal Navy

and this could be Alfred in 1891

Name: Alfred Craddock
Age: 45
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1846
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Occupation: Brass Founder
Civil Parish: Birmingham
Ecclesiastical parish: St Thomas
Town: Birmingham
County/Island: Warwickshire
Registration district: Birmingham

unfortunately he is shown as Single ... this age is out several years but it could be his death as I don't see another likely

Deaths Mar 1895
Craddock Alfred 59 Birmingham 6d 111

otherwise, perhaps Alfred did not make it back to England, or did and died before the next census ...

this is your Henry's military pension record I think:

likely Eleanor's marriage to Joseph Knott

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJ3J-39C

Eleanor in 1861

Name: Eleanor Knott
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: 1808

Civil Parish: Powick

Registration district: Upton On Severn

Joseph Knott 54

since Henry was an infant in 1841 it is probably unlikely that he was the child of an older child of John and Mary Craddock, Jane being in the household and the most likely parent

of course this may all be info you have already Helen :-)

another member here has all of John and Mary's children in their tree, see the search results here:

rootgatherer Report 23 Sep 2014 10:03

A tree on Ancestry has Henry's death 7 Jan 1894 in Irvine, Ayrshire.

Scottish death registrations name the parents including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knows the details.

The Ancestry tree gives his parents as Henry Craddock and Mary Westwood.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 25 Sep 2014 20:57

I've just realised Helen sent me her tree permission a few days ago ...

confirms the 1881 and 1891 family I posted up at the beginning
and shows Henry's parents as Henry Craddock and Mary Westwood
and the marriage record rootgatherer posted shows
Father: Henry Craddock, Carpenter

if John and Mary Craddock in the 1841 census I posted were the grandparents of the Henry in question, perhaps his father was their son Henry baptised 1813

the military record for Helen's Henry that Gritty posted that shows him as an electroplater
would be a good match for a brother who was a brass founder in 1891 (Alfred)

the family that rootgatherer posted has a Henry who is a cooper, and he was present in 1861 in the census when Helen's Henry was in the military I believe

my money is still on Henry of Harborne and younger brother Alfred

I will send Helen another PM to ask her to have a look at this thread instead :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 25 Sep 2014 23:18

I can't seem to persuade Helen to come to this thread

her PM

This could be my Henry
The name Henry Alfred has been used a lot in my family I have a cousin Henry Alfred, my father, grandfather also couple of uncles. I had tried to get this info before my father passed away. I wonder whuch regiment Alfred was in.
Thanks for all your help.

Gritty posted his military record above in the thread Helen :-)
a copy of the original documents can be downloaded at findmypast
(or someone would probably send you a copy if you don't have that subscription, I don't myself)

if you think the Henry & Alfred brothers in the workhouse might be your Henry, getting Alfred's birth certificate could tell you his mother's and possibly father's name

(I am usually suspicious if no trace of a father is found and a man names a father with the same name as himself when he marries especially when far from home ... often that suggests the father is made up, although since your Henry called his father a carpenter maybe he did know his father's details)

I will try again to get Helen to visit the thread!
