Happy with the success of your previous help I am keen to find more info on another family, the Crowthers. Looking through FreeBMD for the period there are quite a few about but Emily, as below, is the only one of the period:-

Births Jun 1846
Crowther Emily Leeds
23 532

Can anybody see her with family in 1851 please?

Many thanks,
Frances

CE31/130 is most likely to be the reference number used by the local records office ( as opposed to the GRO unique ref no.)

Using http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/
Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1866
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
CROWTHER Emily THOMPSON John W St Mary, Quarry Hill Leeds CE31/130
Just examples - not known to be related
CROWTHER Ann E THOMPSON Thomas St George, Leeds Leeds CE44/B/98
CROWTHER Jane GREAVES James St Peter, Leeds Leeds CE46/70/476
ANSELL David BOOTH Amelia Jews Synagogue Belgrave Street (The Great Synagogue) Leeds SYN1/37
CLARK Henry E ROWNTREE Rachel M Quaker Meeting House Leeds QUAK/1/97
CLARK Jane A HOLMES Joseph Leeds Registered Building Leeds RB/34/138

It's an unusual format for a local ref.
More typical is a ref like CE46/70/476
Here the 3 elements are:
1) a church code - so CE46 is the code for St Peter, Leeds (& CE31 is the code for St Mary, Quarry Hill)
As one might guess it's a C of E church - pre-1899, only CofE, jews and quakers (plus the registrar) were authorized to keep marr registers, so a registrar would have to attend all other non-conformist marrs with his official rego for the couple to sign (of course, he conducted rego office marrs too).
Post-1898, most non-conformists applied to become authorized (except RCs until the 1980s).
2) a sequence # in the registers for that church
3) an entry # or local page # (usually it's an entry # for marrs so the index can say who wed whom)
I don't know why the St Mary, Quarry Hill didn't have a seq # - maybe it was lightly used, or closed quickly.

Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1846
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
CROWTHER Emily Leeds West Leeds WEST/21/81
Just an example -
CROWTHER Louisa Leeds West Leeds WEST/33/210

The structure of a birth (& death) ref is similar
The main difference is the first code is the subdistrict code for the subdistrict where the event was rego'ed.
For B's & D's, page #s are likely to be used in place of entry #s.
They weren't for those B's - a a local b/d rego has 100 pages & 500 entries.
The registrar's marr rego has 100 pp & 200 entries.
Chuech marr rego's have 250pp & 500 entries.

Thanks Mike. Looks like we will never really know as they don't seem to have registered her, or changed their minds on the name!

Mike * Report 19 Nov 2014 11:34

There are a few Sarah Ann Crowthers registered in Leeds 1841/42 but be aware that there is a marriage for a John & Hannah in Leeds in 1845 so if it is the right couple, Sarah Ann may have been registered under her mother's maiden name .

Name: John Crowther - Batchelor, Cloth Dresser <<<<
Spouse: Hannah Rawling - Spinster
Father: Abraham Crowther - Cloth Dresser
Marriage: 9 Nov 1845 - Leeds, St Peter, Yorkshire, England
Spouse's Father : Thomas Rawling - Clothier

If you buy a birth cert for Emily, Jane or Ann it would tell you if their mother's maiden name was Rawling

Thanks Mike - the plot thickens! This makes that birth certificate even more important
