Hi Malyon - Yes I think that will be him.- I have his birth down as 1779- haven;t tried to get any further back than that as Yelland is a common surname in that area so rather gave up as I was working only from census records and don;t know how to get further back.
Many thanks
Pat

Hi Argyll Gran -
I think this must be him and I reckon he was never really fit for war service - but I suppose they were running short of men by 1917-1918. I think he must have spent time in Hinchingbrooke House -(then used as a hospital) as some of his Post cards were from there and there is one of the War Memorial in Huntingdon. In one PC Annie shows a pic of a street in Huntingdon and says 'Jim' worked there as a young man - I am guessing, in the open air as he doesn't seem to have been very fit ! I do wish my late Mum hadn't been so ashamed of being illegit. ! and I have no-one left to ask now.
Thanks again

Pat

Where were the postcards posted? Both James's and Annie's?

Patricia Report 16 Jul 2015 16:47

Thanks Argyll Gran - I think you are right - that is all I have been able to trace of him - but I still can't find out where or when he died.
I am guessing he didn't live long after 1924 when the last postcard came. I suspect he met my Grandmother when she was a housemaid or in service to a General in Alford , Lincolnshire at some point.

Chris - yes thanks - I do have my Mother's birth details as you have printed for me - Thanks.

I've sidetracked again to James Brooker.

Where were James and Annie's postcards postmarked?

This is the only death I can see which would match re age, assuming birth in 1886, though the Army record seems to be the only thing suggesting that:

Deaths Sep 1939 (>99%)
Brooker James 53 Devizes 5a 135

There are no deaths for a James Brooker in Northamptonshire 1922-50, per FreeBMD.

Another VERY long shot -

There is this James Brooker with mother Annie - he's listed as Marks, but a correction says he was born Brooker, and his mother remarried:

James Marks

This would be his birth:

Births Jun 1889 (>99%)

Parents' marriage (per the correction on Ancestry) - William Edwards listed as son of the Hartshorn grandparents in 1901, and presumably a brother of Annie.

As Ann was born in Kent, per censuses, I guess this is William & Ann's marriage:

William Yelland
mentioned in the record of William Yelland and Ann Castle
Name: William Yelland
Spouse's Name: Ann Castle
Event Date: 26 Sep 1802
Event Place: Saint John,Eltham,Kent,England
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M06782-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 307730, 307731

I wondered if perhaps Edward had been born before their marriage and would be listed under Castle, but can't see him as either Castle or Yelland.

Hi all
The Brooker side doesn't really make sense as yet ? I don't honestly think James was married - he intended (alledgedly) to marry my Grandmother when the war was over but was too ill ? I have postcards from him as late as 1923 ? His postcards are lovely and nearly all of Huntingdon. Postcards from Annie too who refers to James as 'our dear boy' ?

Back to the Yellands- I have been drawing up a tree' yet again and am a little confused.
Can anyone tell me the names and number of children that William b1779and Anne b 1780had - I have 3 from the info you have given me - but nowhere does my Ancestor Edward- born 1802 appear ?

I have now sorted out Edward (1802)and Ruths (1794) family 4 children? Eliz. Ann, Emma, Edward and JOHN - my Great Great Grandfather.

I have got a bit confused I am afraid - what's new !

Sorry to be such a nuisance - but I am so grateful for the help you have already given me.
Pat

Many thanks again - I have been trying to do this for some years and I have an even more difficult one - the last link I am trying to find -- to find records of my Mother's Father - a James Brooker -who possibly came from around Huntingdonshire or London. My Mother was illegitimate - born 1918 in Louth -Lincolnshire - her mother was Jane Ewart Reid Bourhill from Midlothian - Lasswade in Scotland - but she appeared to be working as a servant to an Army General in Alford Lincolnshire. Both Jane and James were born around 1886, James was possibly a gardener or similar and worked for a while as a young man in Hungtingdon.
His Mother- or sister was Annie.

There is 'Houghton' in my Mothers name - Jane Houghton Brooker Bourhill - so perhaps James and Jane met if they were working at Houghton Hall - East Anglia ? No idea really.
He enlisted for the war - 1914 I think - possibly Labour corps - and I did find charred records of him in the army on the internet. BUT he was not fit (emphysema)and was sent home after 2 weeks in France where my Mother was told he was gassed wi h mustard gas.

He was aware of my Mothers birth in 1918 and I have postcards from him saying how delighted he was and hoped to see her soon etc. etc. The postcards stopped in 1923 and I have no idea where or when he died or is buried. In those days illegitimacy was a real stigma and if my Mother knew any more about him she never said.. I think he may have spent some time in Hinchingbrooke H ouse which was used as a hospital in the 1st war - and I asked but there appear to be no records. -Huntingdon again. I would love to have known about him- and where and when he died. but have tried for nearly 20 years to find out more, without any success. i don;t know if he ever got to Scotland or met my Mother etc all but it was said he sent money etc and set my grandmother up with enough to buy a little shop. She died when my Mother was 12 - and so maybe she knew little about him.

Any help again - more than welcome.
Thanks again for all the time you have spent on the Yelland side.

Pat
