I am trying to find any information about my gr grandfather Robert Clarke (possibly known as George). He and May Pearce had a girl on 6 july 1919 in 25 James Street, Moss Side, Manchester called Mona Violet Clarke. She was brought up by a family called Sowerby who already had 2 much older girls. It is possible that Robert was deceased at the time of Mona's birth. Any scrap of information no matter how small would be welcome. Thankyou :-)

Just had a look at the address 1911. Head was an Edwin Moor, and it looks like a lodging house. Probably wouldn't help to investigate this further.
Can I ask how you have heard about the possible "nickname" of George?
I am assuming they never married?

brummiejan Report 23 Apr 2016 18:17

Yet another question!! Is there an occupation for Robert on the birth cert? Worth looking at 1911 census using this, you never know..

Gillian

Gillian Report 23 Apr 2016 19:17

I know nothing about Robert Clarke or May Pearce, my grandmother Mona only had a short birth certificate with just the name Clarke on it and she always thought her real father was called George as she had memories of a George coming to visit her when she was a small child living with the Sowerby family. She thought George was a taxi driver. Full birth certificate shows Robert Clarke is deceased. I cannot find a marriage for Robert Clarke and May Pearce though on the birth certificate she has entered her name as May Clarke.

I wonder if George was just a relative in that case? It would be nice if he were a brother wouldn't it!

There is this Clarke in 1911, who is a cab driver, but it might just be a co-incidence:

Do you know the names of the Sowerby's? A slim chance, but sometimes children were taken on by family members. Worth investigating.

Gillian

Gillian Report 24 Apr 2016 07:31

No sadly not, it was like getting blood from a stone getting any info from Mona. If they were family she wasn't aware of the fact.

Do you know where they lived? Anything whatsoever?

Gillian

Gillian Report 25 Apr 2016 07:59

Nothing, all I know about the Sowerbys is that they had 2 older girls, probably still lived in Manchester though as my mum was born there.
