I think it was a London underground rail station?

There certainly was one on Hortensia Road.

Actually, the first part of the address is 'Sloane School' , Hortensia Rd. which was an actual school and the building is still standing but up for sale for development.

Perhaps he was employed to clean the windows in the school - it certainly had an awful lot of them:

Having looked further, I believe it does say fire station on the image and the most likely explanation is that the school had been temporarily taken over by the AFS. (Auxiliary Fire Service).

Note those at the address are noted on the right hand page as AFS or WAFS and each section has a sub-officer - this gives you more info.

20 March 1942 - Chelsea News and General Advertiser - London, London

Some sacks of coke on a lorry caught fire at Gunter-grove, Chelsea, on Tuesday. The lorry was driven to the fire station Hortensia-road. a few yards away, and the flames were there extinguished by the brigade.


04 July 1941 - Chelsea News and General Advertiser - London, London

inter-club boxing tournament, arranged by the Chelsea Boys’ Club, attracted a large audience to the A.R.P. depot at Carlyle School, Hortensia-road, Chelsea, on Thursday.
