Seeking help on the above family (my GGGGrandfather)

My GGgrandfather was Thomas McCaffery, born 1879 in Barrow-in-Furness to Thomas McCaffery & Sarah (Holden).
Thomas (senior) is said to have been born in Greenock (Scotland) c 1860,according to the 1911 census, which they completed themselves?.Other censuses say otherwise.
The family had changed their surname between 1879 & April 1881 to CARR.I have them on the 1881,1891,1901,1911 & 1921,but can't find them on the 1871 anywhere?
I think I might have them on the 1861 census in High Church,Glasgow,as I do know from Thomas (Juniors) marriage certificate & baptism record, his mother was called Annie & father Thomas..Marriage certificate from 1876 just states 'of full age' ?
I can't find them on the 1851 census either?
If the 1861 census is correct,Thomas (Seniors) siblings were born in Ireland in the late 1840s,so maybe they weren't in Scotland? Thomas (b 1860) mother appears to be Annie McCavin/McGavin although I can't see a marriage in Scotland.
Any help on census details or marriage of Thomas & Annie McCavin would be very much appreciated.

THANK YOU.

What was the occupation of the father on the 1876 marriage cert?

‘Full age’ in 1876 means born no later than 1855 - unless he lied

It would help if you could C&P the 1861 you refer to

EDIT

Found it - McCafferTy

Head’s occ: Tailor

ALL family except Thomas jnr born IRELAND

Look for parents’ marriage on Irishgenealogy, or even familysearch

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they lied? It's the same with Sarah Holden, the bride on the 1876 marriage? She's down on three different censuses as born in three different areas.I only know her father was named as Patrick on marriage certificate.I can find absolutely nothing prior to her marriage,

From various tales in the family I've been told they were of Irish descent, named McCafferty, but couldn't get jobs on arrival in Scotland, due to their Catholic religion,appearance-pale,redheads & Irish sounding surname,so 'altered' it to McCaffery (don't know how true this was ? Definite name change between 1879 & 1881 though-apparently for the same reasons, altough they had jobs ? My grandad said it was because none of them could spell the surname :)

The 1860 birth in High Church reg district is the correct one.

I've used a few credits to look at the cert (although I expect Kelzi has already done that).

Born 19th May 1860 at 130 Garngad Road (same street as in 1861).
Father: Thomas McCaffery, master tailor
Mother: Ann McCaffery, maiden name McCavin. (could be McCarin)

alviegal

alviegal Report 2 Mar 2023 15:40

Seems like they could both be correct?

Thomas McAffery b 28 Jan 1857 at 157 Garngad Road
Father: Thomas McAffery tailor
Mother: Ann MS McCarrin.

I presume this youngster died but can't find a death.
