Jane Report 10 May 2023 10:13

Please can someone have a look on Ancestry for W. H Hollingsworth who sailed for Townsville Queensland Australia on board ship Compta. It arrived on 10.11.1882.

He's mentioned in the "Queensland, Australia Passenger Lists 1848-1942".
Does it give any more information about this Walter please.?

Someone has suggested that he also goes by the name Walter Crewe Hollingsworth. They have also said that Walter Crewe Hollingsworth's MMN is Mary Ann Fullwood. I don't think this is true. I am just trying to get to the bottom of it..

On the 1861 and 71 Walter Arthur b 1858 in Sheffield is with his parents William and Mary Ann Hollingsworth( nee Fulwood). He then disappears.

Their is another Walter Hollingsworth b 1857 in Sheffield his parents were William Francis (Frank) and Mary Ellen (nee Dee). He is with his parents on the 1861 census and then he is under detention at the Industrial School Albert Docks Hull on the 1871.

There is a Walter Hollingsworth born in 1857 on HMS Iron Duke on the 1881 census. Which one is this. He buys himself out of the Navy in 1881. He only joined the Navy in 1880. It said he was born in 1857 but they do lie about their age.

Its all very confusing. Walter Arthur Hollingsworth b 1858 in Sheffield is my family and I am just trying to find out what happened to him.

Thanks for your help

Jane

You can now find the birth mothers surname via the GRO, of course, you also buy the birth certificate.
There will be a Navy record for the Walter on the Iron Duke, this will give his date and place of birth. Find this either on the National Archives website or on Find my Past.

Why are you looking for WH Hollingsworth when you say your ancestry is William Arthur?

The person who has Walter with parents Mary Fullwood has this information attached to Walter Hollingsworth. I guess they think this is when he sailed to Australia but it states his name was W H Hollingsworth. I was just trying to eliminate him from my research.

Thanks for helping me.

Thanks ErikaH

That would suggest that it is Walter with parents William Frank Hollingsworth and Mary Ellen Dee.

My Walter Arthur was born in 1858. (Parents William and Mary Ann nee Fulwood.

So I wonder what happened to my Walter. I will have to keep looking. That is my family you have found their ErikaH.

All the best

I have just seen a newspaper article saying that it was Walter Crewe Hollingsworth that was on HMS Iron Duke. It said he bought himself out of the Navy in Hong Kong. He then went to New York before going to Australia. So i guess that means he was not my Walter Arthur.

So I wonder what happened to him then.

Thanks for your help

Jane.

That's an interesting possibility, ErikaH.
It's a pity it doesn't give any indication of age. There's no other mention of this person in South Africa.

Re William Crewe Hollingsworth, just for interest:
Walter Crewe, according to an apparently well researched tree on Ancestry, was murdered by "native boys" on 14 Sept 1886 off the coast of New Guinea, along with all the rest of the crew of the "Emily".
There are fascinating newspaper reports of the murders, and the severe reprisals later.
