Hi All
Is there someone out there who can access ancestry and check out the following for me.
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/118933536/person/162152202260/facts
Jessie Gertrude Melville b.1803 either Auckland NZ or Wanganui, New Zealand.
LDS has a family tree with both names married to Eugene Henry Robinson first marriage and 2nd marriage to Eric William Ansley. Contacted LDS member who submitted the tree and said he got the data from the above web site. Jessie may of been adopted and Parker may of been her birth name.
She is my grand mother on my mother's side.
Family have always thought she could of been adopted, no one still alive that could put me right about it once and for all.

Have you looked for a birth record for her?

Presumably, you meant to type 1903 for the birth year?

When did legal adoption come into force in New Zealand?

They seem to be two different women - though I admit the Melville record below is from someone's tree, therefore to be regarded with suspicion.

Different dates of death, and different places of death, about 360 miles apart.:

Jessie Gertrude Melville

Cemetery Aramoho Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place Whanganui, Whanganui District, Manawatu-Whanganui, New Zealand
Has Bio? N
Spouse
Eric William Ansley

The Robinson marriage was in 1922.

Eugene Henry Robinson died in 1941 in Wanganui..

I don't see any marriage for Eric William Ansley - but the NZ Marriage Index on Ancestry only goes up to 1937.
A tree on Ancestry claims it was in 1955 - but doesn't offer proof.

In 1969 Jessie and Eric are living at 69 Bell Street, Wanganui.

Thank you for all that data,
NZBDM has Jessies Gertrude Parker 1903 parents are ARTHUR & LAURA
ErikaH
Does this sound possible Jessie Gertrude Parker was her birth name and Charles Albert Melville and Mary Anne Franklin adopted her and they changed her name to Jessie Gertrude Melville. There was no birth certificate for Jessie, that's why when she and my mother went and applied for the old age pension she did not exist

Hi
In NZ you have to go thru the Courts to get adoption documents.
Legal adoption stated in 1881, new act 1955

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Aug 2023 08:44

Yes, the adoption scenario does sound possible -

but impossible to prove without seeing the adoption documents (if any).

Perhaps the next step would be to order a copy of the birth cert, to see the parents' details.
For instance, were they married or not? There might also be some note added to indicate that Jessie was adopted.

Thanks, I will try and get a printout instead on Jessie Gertrude Parker and her recorded parents. I'm told a printout can give you more details than a certificate.

Hi all
Just received printout, nothing other than father and mother mentioned as being parents of Jessie Gertrude Parker, nothing about possible adoption.

That's a pity.
Don't know what else to suggest, I'm afraid!

The printout and certificate should both give you the same info.
The only difference is that the printout isn't an official legal document.
NZBDM says it is "A copy of the information from the registration, and usually used for research purposes. It is either handwritten or typed"
