In answer to your question, accents and general illiteracy were responsible for a lot of the spellings and mistranscriptions

I have several Birdmans - but Lincolnshire/Yorkshire. What links have you between Boardman/Birdman name? Is it just a case of census takers mis-hearing regional accents?
