Many of my Morgan ancestors worked on the railways in some form or another from the very beginning of the 19th centuary. As Simon said the POR in Kew hold many staff registers. I can also recommend The Railway Ancestors Family History Society - http://www.railwayancestors.fsnet.co.uk/ Also if your ancetors happened to be in the Northwest, the Cheshire Records Office has some staff registers online: http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/railways/home.htm
