Hi, I have a mystery which I am trying to solve! Charles Henry Barnard married Martha Lavinia Pitman. 1897 - they had a son Percival Charles Barnard registered in Harmondsworth - have his birth certificate. (Staines on BMD record I have found) Percival was given up for adoption (although adoption wasn't officially legal at theis time. He grew up as Percival Thomas. 1904 - Charles & Martha had a son Dudley Arthur Barnard registered in the same place with the same home address etc (have birth certificate) They kept this son. The mystery is that Dudley Arthur was always knwn as Buncombe, not Barnard. Did he change his surname? Did his parents change theirs? Which is their 'real' surname? Charles Henry and his family lived in Surbiton, Surrey (UK) and I have found a census record of a Charles Henry Buncombe b 1865 in Stepney, living in Surrey (father Charles Hope Buncombe, mother Alice Buncombe, nee Price) - these could be his parents if Buncombe was his real name! How do I find out the truth?! There were also 3 sisters which Dudley grew up with: 1906 Winifred 1907 Florence 1909 Hilda - were they Barnard or Buncombe? I can't find records of them at all! I can't find any census records on this family at all - I know they definatle lived in Surbiton, Surrey. Any help would be great!!! Thanks, Steph

Hi. Thank You For help. This is driving me mad!!!!! Thomas Maddison, born Sunderland 1857. He married Mary Whyms?? From free BMD I have them listed page 10a. vol 739. When I tried to send for cert, they sent back to say no records!! But it is clearly there, listed in 1876? I think that I have found Mary on the 1861/1871 census, from Ancecestry. The last name is very badly spelt. 1861Census. New castle. Civil Parish St John. Alice Weims 1860 born Newcastle Daughter. Ann ' 1832 Gateshead Wife. Ann ' 1854 ' Daughter. John ' 1854 ' Son. Mary ' 1858 ' Daughter. Robert ' 1830 ' Head. 1871 Cesus Durham, Civil Parish. Hedworth Monkton and Yarrow. Alice Niel Womys. Ann O Niel Crisend Niel Womy. Henry Niel Womys. Isabells Niel Womys Mary Niel Womys. Robert Niel Womys. Daniel O Niel Ann Weymess. Robert Weymess. Head. As you can see It has been badly transcribed. I can't find any of them after 1871. I would be very gratful for any info you can uncover. Kind Regards Viv.

Hi Zoe Here is another one if you are interested. Looking for the Birth of Ralph Marshall abt 1889 Chester Le Street, Durham and or Stephen Ralph Marshall abt 1889 Im so sure this is one and the same person, but would love to know if its Stephen Ralph Marshall on the Birth certificate or Just Ralph Marshall, or if its two different people. Once again he moved to Scotland and I found what I am 99.9% sure is his grave, checked out his death, marriages and a death of a son of his and they all give his name as Stephen Ralph Marshall but we all thought it was just Ralph as this was the family name that has been handed down all the generations. any help would be appreciated Thanks Linda

Hi Zoe Re Pratts. The 1871 for William Pratt does state born Isleworth, Middlesex. I haven't been able to get a lookup for Charles & Maria & children on the 1841 census, have posted requests on this board but no response and as I am in Staffs have no access to it. Not to worry! Thanks anyway. Ann (Dorothy)

Zoe, Rebecca married as a Smith - her father's name was David Smith, Labourer (nice and generic!!). As far as I know she stayed with the Cordingleys until she married - I have pictures of her on her 50th wedding anniversary with the son of Percy Cordingley. I will try asking on Tips if they know about the Abandoned Baby Register. Thanks. Margaret

Hi Zoe . I dont know when they moved to Scotland only sometime beween 1891 and 1901 I didnt think of looking for the two missing ones in Scotland in 1891 so you could be right on that one. Maybe they were househunting :-) Seems strange to take your daughter and not you wife though? But who knows eh! Im off to bed now its sleep time in Oz, well way past it really and I really have to give me eyes and head a bit of a rest from all of this if thats possible, it seems to have taken over my life this past week, Im truly addicted.
