To Add to the above. Mystery of Julia Harriet Charlton solved. Julia emigrated to Australia and married my great grandfather W A Sutcliffe, prior to her marriage she had 3 sons as listed above but their fathers or father is unknown (she told a few fibs). DNA has given us some answers and linked the Australian descendants with the UK descendants of her Brother Frederick Sloan Charlton. If anyone requires any further info please contact me. Cheers Rita Brown

Rita - this is an old thread, so una might not be checking it.
Click on her name in the header, and send her a pm(=personal message). GR will send her an email saying she's got a pm from you - assuming her email addy is current.

Hi Una,

Did you ever find your Julia? I have a mystery, I have a Gertrude Julia Charlton born Plumstead Kent approx 1857, she is my great grandmother, She was known as Julia to her family here. She came with a son Frederick Sloan Charlton born in 1884 on his death certificate it says he born in Kent, Julia stated her father was a hop grower. Julia gave birth to another boy on arrival in Adelaide Sth Australia, that she named Ernest Albert Charlton, stating the father was Frederick Sloan Charlton, (family legend lists him as her cousin?) Her mother was always listed as Elizabeth, her father Augustus (I can find no Augustus) Frederick Sloane (Sloan( is such an unusual combination. Julia married my great grandfather William Sutcliffe in Australia, I hope this is the same lady and we break through the brick wall. Regards Rita Brown (Melbourne Australia)

Hi Mel, Apologies for delay in replying. Have given my eyes an hours well needed rest.. I don't think that there is a connection,as that name doesn't appear in the family at all. Many thanks anyway. Eunice

Really desperate with this suggestion but as she would not be listed as daughter then I thought I would look at this one. There is actually no ditto marks where the surname should be - it is blank. Does not help that I can not find the births for the children that are listed on this entry. 1871 Name: Julia Prockler Age: 13 Estimated birth year: abt 1858 Relation: Niece Gender: Female Where born: Plumstead, Kent, England Civil Parish: Stoke Newington Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthew County/Island: London Country: England Source information: RG10/311 Registration district: Hackney Sub-registration district: Stoke Newington ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Folio: 18 Page: 30 Household schedule number: 154 GSU Number: 818891 J William Prockler abt 1831 Woolwich, Kent, England Head Julia Prockler abt 1840 Plumstead, Kent, England Wife Benjamin Prockler abt 1864 Plumstead, Kent, England Son Ellen Prockler abt 1870 Stoke Newington, Middlesex, England Daughter John Prockler abt 1869 Stoke Newington, Middlesex, England Son Mel (Who will be in hiding for a while)

Hi Nikki, Look as though that's the only answer(when funds allow) I was wondering if it is the correct Julia, whether perhaps George Rumsey was in the army & they were out of the country. Thanks for your time, Eunice

May be worth your while investing in the marriage cert for the Julia that you've found to see if the Fathers name ties in?

JULIA HARRIET CHARLTON was born at Plumstead,Kent in 1856.(hand written entry) I have her on 1861 with family RG9/408/41/page 30. Can't find her on any other census. Have checked death registers until 1884 so far.Not there. Checked marriages until 1884,Only one found was a Julia Margaret Charlton(type written entry)to a George RumseyFreeBMD JunQ1878. The other possible partner was a Charles Greenaway, but have traced him on census married to Emma S Elliot Could Harriet have been mistranscribed as Margaret? Have looked on later census for George Rumsey with a wife named Julia or Harriet, but can't find anything. Any ideas please? Eunice
