Tricky Family History - census gaps I am trying to find out more about my GG Grandfather John Thomas Wheeler, born Gloucester in March 1853 and his parents & siblings - his parent are Thomas Wheeler (Stone Mason) and June Wheeler (formerly Creed). They were married in Q4 1852. June was born in Upton St Leonards, Gloucester (although for some strange reason on some census records it shows Upton St Leonards as being in Worcestershire). In 1851 she is still June Creed and is an umarried Dressmaker living in Barton St Mary Gloucester. Can't find her in 1861. In 1871 she is in Cheltenham and has two sons (William 18 and George 12) but no sign of John Thomas who it would appear was living elsewhere in Cheltenham as a Tailors Apprentice. In 1881she is a widow living in Cheltenham. in 1891 she is living in Cheltenham with an Alfred Wheeler age 25(assume her son). Thomas Wheeler is a mystery - I have serached records on the 1861 census for a Thomas Wheeler who is a stonemason in Gloucestershire and the only one I could find was aged 27 and was a criminal prisoner (i.e. in gaol) in Gloucester and his occupation is listed as Stonemason. I then looked on 1851 census and found a Thomas Wheeler living in Cheltenham aged 17, and interestingly his father William B Wheeler was a stonemason and Thomas was what looks like a labourer?. Can't seem to find him on a census after 1861 So the questions are: Where are June Wheeler and her children on the 1861 census? What happened to Thomas Wheeler after his 'stretch' in prison in 1861. Jane shows appears to show as 'married' on the 1871 census (but Thomas is not at the same address) but by 1881 she is a widow. Can anyone give me any pointers please? TVM Chris |

Thanks Margaret and Nicky I haven't managed to work out how to do that yet - it does look a bit confusing as one big block - looks much better now. |

Hi Chris...Ive had a quick look but as you say no 'obvious' sign of June in 1861. It would help if you could paste the censuses you have already found on the thread...(a quick tip.....When you put a request for help and its a long explanation/query.....just put in a short title and add that then go back into the thread and add the rest as a reply.....that way you can space out the request so its easier to read). Best regards Suzanne |

So June, and her sons also, are 'missing' in 1861? Just a thought, if the husband was a stonemason, might they be living in a different area for work purposes? Jay |

Just to explain further my theory was that if i could find Jane Wheeler on the 1861 census and Thomas Wheeler wasn't at the same address it would add further weight to the argument that it is in fact he who is in prison in 1861 but now that i can't find Jane I am even more confused? Chris |
