Hello Liz, you could well be right it is very plausable. I suppose I was grasping at straws thinking the link with her saying her father was Leslie and then calling her baby Leslie might be true. How unlucky am I that Mildred also did the same so now I have two huge holes in my tree on the paternal lines! However I do appreciate all the help and lookups that you've done this morning. Will have to just keep wondering but at least you've closed some options by checking for possible Leslie's. Many many thanks Jenny

Dizzy Lizzy 205090 Report 12 Oct 2005 11:25

Sorry it would appear not. These are my own conclusions from what we have learned so far, and are purely personal speculation: Annie Maria Richardson had baby Mildred by a mystery man, unmarried. She lodged the baby with friends/ relatives nearby so she could continue to work to support them both. She was quite naturally distraught at being separated from her child so soon, and called herself Mildred to keep a mental link with her baby. Mildred grew up not knowing who her father is (surprisingly common in those days), and invented a fictional dad for her marriage (again, very common), using the name Leslie because she liked it, and Richardson so she would appear legitimate to the registrar. She called her baby Leslie, because she still liked the name. Perhaps her hubby didn't know she lied about her Dad, thinking she was legitimate, so she kept up the pretence? Anyway, sadly we will never know. Liz x

Dizzy Lizzy 205090 Report 12 Oct 2005 11:07

I have searched the 1891 for any Leslie, living in Richmond, no specified age or place of birth and the only one is a two-year-old. Sorry, Liz x

Thanks Tracy & Liz for trying for me. Do you know that Mildred went onto do the same gave birth to Leslie Alfred Ernest 1912 in 12 Chessington Road,Hanwell,Brentford only Mildred's name on birth cert but her clue was in her childs name Leslie was her mysterious father ,Alfred was her stepfather so Ernest must be her baby's father. Now looking for Leslie around 1890 Richmond, surrey or Brentford areas age 20- 30. and Ernest around 1912 in Brentford area age 20 -30. These Richardson ancestors are driving me nuts!!!! Best wishes Jenny

Nope. Sorry. The sad truth is that you will probably never know who Mildreds father was. I have loads born after their ''father'' died.

Hello Liz Thanks yes have found baby Mildred boarder but couldn't find Mum Annie anywhere! I'm sure her name was Annie Maria as have her on 61-01 census only missing the vital one 1891 needed to hopefully identify her partner Leslie. She shows at birth as Anne Maria, then on 1861 as Maria A,1871 as Maria A ,1881 as Maria then 1901 now married as Annie M Fruin. She is living in Richmond for all census found so far. Hope you can help. Jenny

I searched for any Richardson born 1860 in Richmond and only one came up - a domestic servant, working in Richmond called Mildred! Coincidence maybe? Are you sure of baby Mildred's Mum's name? Liz x

Jenny Report 12 Oct 2005 10:13

Hello, I have Mildred Florence Richardson DOB 11 Nov 1890 in 1 Tolson Road, Isleworth,Brentford,Middlesex. To mother Annie Maria Richardson. Annie was a domestic servant at the time but can't find her in 1891 census and this might help locate Leslie too if he worked at same address or lived there. Annie was born 1860 in Richmond ,Surrey and would be 31 on 1891 census. There is no name given for father but on Mildreds marriage cert later she states father was Leslie and that he was dead in 1918 when she married. Mildred went onto name her first son Leslie in 1912 so this was probably true. Does anyone have any ideas if I can ever find this missing Leslie in order to complete a whole missing branch on my tree please? Jenny
