Hi Elaine,
Di Brown here, I corresponded with you years ago. Have seen your letters enquiring info, on Thomas Pennell born Lympstone. He is my 2nd Grt Grandfather. he was born Thomas Pannell and changed his name to Pennell for reasons of his own, My Father had always said there was a name change somewhere back in the family.

Thomas was born to Thomas Pannell And Mary Elliot C.19th may 1799 his brother Philip Pannell is also my other 2nd Great Grandfather C 15th mar 1801 which has made my Pannell tree very confusing to say the least .

I was years looking for Thomas and looking in all the wrong areas not knowing that he was born in Lympstone until I was in contact with some one who put me on the right track....

Thomas married Catherine Caroline McCloskey 25th Aug 1821 St. Marylebone London.

hope this helps, if you need any other info, then I might just be able to help.

regards Di

Hi Sara, The Catherine that you have found is she with a Thomas by any chance ? Thomas should be 41 ! so there would be an age gap ! I really don't have any idea of Catherine's age or where she is from ... so I can't discount it !! All I know is that Catherine Caroline is Mother to my Henry Thomas Pennell b 1824 ... I don't even know if Caroline is her surname but it COULD be.!! I've searched for Catherine Caroline on the IGI but to no avail. Thanks Sara, much appreciated. Elaine :-)

Don't know whether this is any use to you Elaine but there is a Catherine Pennell in Topsham age 60, on the 1841. Sara

Hi Lyla, I need to get the 1841 next week ... I'm afraid its a case of trawling. I'm leaving you this for the moment, as I'm frantically searching for her Death Cert. I know I have it somewhere ... with the death cert for Isabella (2nd wife) but I can't find that either. Grrrrrr ! Deaths Mar 1842 PENNELL Catherine Caroline Lambeth 4 180 They COULD be in the Smith St region of Lambeth ... as thats where they all are in 51 & 61. Well, John Place, Smith Road and Smith Road. To be honest, when I got the cert in 2003, I had just started my research and wasn't sure what to do with it !!! I was doing my Pennell's whilst also doing my Shawcross's ... the Shawcross's took over and only this week am I starting again with the Pennell's. You are good for offering ... please don't go out your way on my account. Elaine :-)

Thankyou everyone, for your replies. I have found on the IGI, the christenings of: 1. EMILY ELLEN PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 07 FEB 1830 Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England 2. JANE SIDNEY PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 12 JUN 1822 3. JANE SIDNEY PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 11 AUG 1822 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England 4. EMILY MARY PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 08 OCT 1827 5. EMILY MARY PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 18 NOV 1827 Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England 6. HENRY THOMAS PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 01 JAN 1824 7. HENRY THOMAS PENNELL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 25 JAN 1824 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England born to Thomas Pennell & Catherine Caroline but I can find NO marriage record for them. Have found the death of Catherine Caroline Pennell in March 1842 I have found the marriage of Thomas Pennell to Isobella Foster in March 1848. I have Thomas Pennell on the 1851 census in London with his 2nd wife Isobella and two children, William 23, & Charles 18. Thomas is a Messenger b Lympstone, Devon. All children were born in Marylebone area of London. I also have him on the 1861 with Isobella, again in Lambeth, London. I have Isobella's death cert, registered by William her Stepson. I have searched the IGI for a birth/christening of Thomas Pennell in Lympstone c 1800 but can only find other Pennell connections to Devon. I was hoping to locate Thomas's christening entry so as to take my tree a little further back, but him being born in Lympstone c 1800 is all I have for him, and this is off the '51 & '61 census. Even finding Thomas on the London 1841 census would be advantageous !! he MAY be with his first wife Catherine ! ...HOPEFULLY. Geoff, thanks for your very kind offer of searching the records ... but all I have is what's on the census ... b 1800 Lympstone, Devon ... but is that correct ? The rest of the huge Pennell family originate from Dawlish ... but as yet I can not find that connection. I know there is one, cos I remember my Grandma talking about the Dawlish lot ! (30 years ago !) Irene, how to I get to 'Devon' on the IGI ... this is a new one on me ... sorry for being thick ...I've just been on to have a search round but anything past the IGI and 1881 Census lookup is beyond me !!! *IRENE* ... couldn't find anything, got frustrated, so Googled IGI Batches ... and up came the site ! Wicked ! Playtime I think. Have found a Philip Pennell & William E Penell both born Lympstone ...THANKYOU ... I'm going to play now!! Thanks .... for everyone's help Elaine :-)

Elaine - Dont know if you have this, but I have found a Thomas Pannel aged 15 on the 1841 Devon Census. Reference HO107/0207 Folio 12 Page 18 Entry 13 in the Parish of Lympstone. He's an agricultural labourer living in the Mitchel household. So far I havent been able to find any other Pennells. Shall keep looking. Linda Again I dont know if this helps but on the 'Marriage Licence Allegations - Vicar General' (Dont really know what this is) but applications for marriage licence were made on the 9th August 1819 by a couple named Pennell and McPherson. Also on the 8th November 1819 a couple named Pennell and Wolrond. No first names are given.

If anyone has access to ...or could give me an online addy, I'd be really grateful. I'm searching for a Thomas Pennell b 1800 Devon: Lympstone Have looked on Devon FHS ... but it looks as if they only do 1813 -> am I reading it correctly ? and they don't cover anything for Lympstone Elaine :-)
