He's with his grandma on the 81 census too. His full name there is Joseph Henry Dale and it says they were all born Crookes, Yorkshire.

I dont know the area, but possible birth: Eccleshall covers Nether Hallam.

You are going to have to buy the cert to get his parents £7 from GRO online. Do you not have a marriage for him which would at least give dads name so you could tie it into the birth?

Hi Joanne,

There's a Joseph Henry Dale in the Birth Records for 1872, GRO Ref: Q3 1872 9b 558 Leeds.

This could be him, I can't see any other Joseph H's born with the next 2 years in Yorkshire.

Cheers

Phil

Isn't he the one who's a widower on the 1901 census? He's a visitor at the Bailey household in Birmingham. He's age 29, born Sheffield, a printer and has 2 children with him Thomas 9 and Blanch 5, both born Birmingham.

Update, Sorry, no, found him in 1901 he's Joe Dale with wife Ada and children Mabel 4 and Willie 2 and then another child Freddie age 11. Ada's from a previous relationship?

Id already added the Eccleshall one as that covers the area he is in at Nether Hallam Phil but you seem to have a different vol no. Was that freebmd?

Heather,

Yes, you got to it whilst I was still looking, and I'm ashamed to say the vol was down to typing too quickly, many apologies :-(

Hi Joanne,

Done a bit of digging, and I'm as confused as you. I tracked down John, Frederick & George as the only likely candidates as Joseph's father.
John married a Fanny Isabel and had 8 kids by 1881 but they had ones in 1872 & 73, so they're unlikely to also have had Joseph.

Frederick married an Ada and had their 1st child in 1879, so that's a no go.

George married an Isabella and their first child was in 1877, so no go again.

My only thought is that Joseph is the son of one of the daughters, born out of wedlock therefore keeping the Dale name.

Cheers

Phil
