Marriage cert - what does this mean?

On an English marriage cert from 1855 I have, it says:

"Married in the Parish Church according to the rights and ceremonies of the Established Church by me, (and this bit is written in) superintendent registrar's certificate for Marriage without license"
Signed by the Officiating Minister.

Can anyone explain all that to me?
What does without license mean?

Thanks in advance!

this is all i can find, dont know if its of use

4. Marriage by Superintendent Registrar's Certificate without Licence
The final method of getting married in accordance to the rites of the Church of England, is by the authority of a superintendent registrar's certificate without licence. However, this method is for the marriage of qualifying relatives-in-law (see prohibited marriages for further information). If this method is approved, the church where your marriage is to take place must be located in the same registration district as the register office that issues the certificate. Furthermore, one of you must have lived in the parish for seven days prior to giving notice. Twenty-one clear days after giving notice, a certificate of authority to get married will be issued. The marriage must take place within 12 months from the date your notice was entered in the notice book

Jen,
Thanks!

So it looks like they were some sort of "in-law" relationship before they married.

Need to delve a bit deeper then :)

Thanks!

Well, I was thinking along the lines that one of the parties had been married before to a brother or sister of the husband/wife - but I can't find anything.

perhaps I'm thinking along the wrong lines!

Can anybody give me a clue as to how else they could have been "relatives in law"?

Have you tried tracing them on the 1841 or 1851 census to see if that helps?

If not, post their names and all other information and I will have a look (when I get back from dinner!!)

Thanks Sylvia, that would be very kind!

Details from the cert are:

William Staples b. circa 1930 in East Leake, Leicestershire, England.

Son of John Staples - labourer.

At the time of marriage William was a labourer, but I think he later was a coal miner.

And

Ann Draper b. circa 1836 in Long Whatton, Leicestershire, England.

Daughter of William Draper - Framework knitter.

At the time of marriage Ann was a framework knitter.

They were married in the parish of Long Whatton, Leicestershire. In the presence of:

Thomas Draper and Eliza Draper - not sure who they were!

Thanks!

Keith,
Thank you!

Now, I need to print this out and go and think about it, as I'm dreadful at trying to think things out.
