I haven't renewed my sub for Ancestry,as I have got most of my info from Censuses, but I have done some lookups for my cousin's wife in the past, and she has come up with another....
She believes that her gran was in service with Lady Lonsdale, and thinks it would be round the time of the 1891 census.
I have looked up Lady Lonsdale, and they are the Lowther family with castle and estates in Cumbria. Now she would have served her,I would expect at a London address,as her gran was born in Pimlico.
I found a marriage of Constance Gladys Lowther(Lady Lonsdale) in June 1885 at Strand.
The name of her gran is Ellen Jenner(1865- 1946).She married Thomas Henry Parish in Mar 1895.

there is a possibility that they were in London at the time of the census,so if anyone could find anything on this I would be most grateful.
Thankyou
Brenda

Brenda,

I can't pin her down at the moment as none come up with birth in Pimlico, do you have her parents or another census to reference her to?

None in 1891 in service, there were 4 but all with their families. I'll broaden the search once I'm sure who I'm looking for.

Thank you Pamela, that sounds like them.
They were living in Pimlico at the time of the birth,of at least the 3rd of their children.
Their children were ...Thomas Douglas Cyril 1898
Alfred Arthur 1902...
Margaret Nina 1904(my cousin's mother).
I believe they hailed from Kent.
Will get back, must go and get lunch.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Pamela,
I believe she was definitely born in 1865,but know that the census sometimes isn't correct.
The last one who is a servant,is it with Lady Lonsdale?,or maybe the servants lived out?
My cousin was particularly interested to find out if the stories she had heard as a girl, about her gran being a "ladies maid" to Lady Lonsdale, were true,
as you know what a lot of tales they told us!
I will pass the other info on to my cousin,as she has suddenly got interested at the age of almost 80!

Brenda,

well she's a servant to the household she is with... The Thompsons. But then I am sure changes in job were not uncommon, and it may well have been that she was in service to the Lonsdales, but not precisely at the time of the census.

Depending how far you want to go with it, if you know the location of the Lonsdale residences (and I wouldn't discount her having gone with them to Cumbria, the trains were running then), you could go to the local archives and see what records are available on the house. There may be wage-rolls of staff etc. Its quite amazing what is deposited at archives, apparently one of my ancestor's bank books is at one, I've just got to find the time to go there and view it!

Good luck, and hey, its never too late to start!

Thanks both of you.
I can't make it to the record office,as my husband is on oxygen 24 hours,,but maybe my cousin can get her son or daughter to go,and hey,I am 72,and at times still feel
21!!!

PS. I am getting dinner ready tonight for 4 twenty-something strapping grandsons, who decided last night that they wanted to come for the weekend!!
They still think I'm up to it!,and they will be HUNGRY when they come in as they are going go-carting!
