Hi Steven
I've had another look for Gertrude for you with no luck I'm afraid.
I looked in the BMD indexes for births registered 1st qtr 1889 & found 3 Gertrude Allens.Nottingham,W Derby & Dartford.1 Reg last qtr 1888 Hendon.I doubt if its any of these.
I'm guessing the year is wrong or Gertrude was actually her middle name.Alternatively she was registered in her fathers name!
Have you ever found her on the censuses?
I could'nt find Mary after 1891.She'd worked for the Gales for years,Caroline Gale died & her husband was a widower living in the almshouses in 1901.
She could have married but I have found no evidence to support this.
Sorry not to have broken down your brickwall!
Regards Maggi

Hi Again Steven
Perhaps this is Gertrude?
There are 2 births registered in name Gertrude Mary Allen. One April 1888 2c 324 Bradfield the other Oct 2c 331 Bradfield.Bradfield is Berkshire. The counties have changed however so this could be present day Oxfordshire.
Do you not have Gertrudes marriage cert? That would give her fathers name possibly?

Margaret Report 9 Jan 2008 16:25

Hi Steven
Not having much luck with Gertrude I'm afraid.
I found baptism for Mary Allen Caversham St Peter 1850 18 Aug d George & Margaret a carter.
I found burial of Margaret 3 Sept 1861.It looks like George remarried to an Eliza.Marriage not St Peter.
I looked 1887/8/9 for any Gertrude!!
I found Mary in the parish of St Peter in 1891 still employed by same family. What makes you think she is Gertrudes mother?
There are other parishes within Caversham but unfortunately I dont have baptism records for these. However I have to say as Mary remained in the same parish for so many years I believe she would have baptised her daughter there.Unless of course it was a 'Family secret'
Is there any other info you could give me?
Regards Maggi

Hi Maggi, thanks for your offer. I am looking for my great grandmother Gertrude who was a foster in early 1890s by James and Mary Rutherford.

Her mother could be Mary Allen. She worked in Post Office at Caversham. So her daughter Gertrude Allen was born about Dec 1888. I am unable to find her birth certificate.

Could you please look up in Caversham to see if any Allen were there from 1887 to 1890? Or maybe Gertrude Rutherford after 1890.

Also please look up Mary Allen who was born 1850 in Caversham and her parents were George and Margaret Allen.

Thanks, Steven.

Hi Barbara
Its a bit late tonight to search deeply but I had a quick look for you.
At first glance I cant find Isaacs baptism but I think its very likely he is the child of another Isaac & Mary Tappern as there are other baptisms in the right time slot.
I found a baptism for a Mary Anne Simmonds 15 Aug 1821 daughter of William & Catherine lab Goring Heath

Burial Mary Tappern 14 June 1877 age 53
Burial Isaac Tappern 11 July 1888 age 76
Unfortunately there are no futher details on these.

My Goring disc covers Bapts 1639 - 1950,Marrs 1639 - 1982,Burials 1639 - 1964

When I've a little spare time I'll sort out some more info for you.Do ask if you need anything specific.

Sorry I dont know who owned the land.My research has'nt really gone much beyond people so far
Bye for now Maggi

Hi Maggie,

You are a star !

I knew that Mary's maiden name was Simmonds, but only have her d.o.b. as an estimated 1823 (from census records). Do you have the records that far back ?
Also Isaac Tappern, the same year but no date.
I believe Mary died in the first half of 1877, and Isaac possibly in 1888, although that Isaac Tappern's age doesn't tie in totally with my dates !
If you have records of any burials in Goring it would be extremely helpful to have things confirmed. My late mother-in-law was certain that her great grandparents were buried in the churchyard next to the river.
It is interesting to hear that you had many relations in the same part of the world, and have done quite a bit of research in the area. I don't suppose you know who owned the land around Little Heath. We understand that Isaac was a gamekeeper on the estate, and that Eleanor went to work "at the big house".
Family legend says that the lady of the manor was the sister of Eleanor's future husband's employer, and that was how they met. Of course this info has been passed down the generations, and you know how things get muddled !
Anyway, many thanks for your help so far, even if you can't give me any other info !

Regards
Barbara

Hi Barbara
I have done some fairly intensive research in Goring as I have many ancestors there.
Your Eleanor has been mistranscribed or originally mispelt(Not their strongest point in those days!)
1852 May 16
TAPLIN Ellenore d Isaac & Mary lab b 22 Jan

(Mary was nee Simmonds)

The siblings were Taplin too though Tapperns are there!!
Hope this helps. If you need any other stuff just ask.

Old Baranne Report 8 Jan 2008 16:02

Hi Maggie

I have a family mystery, which you may be able to help me with.
I am looking for any record of the birth of an Eleanor Tappern. Her birth is not registered, and I have not been able to find her in census records until after her marriage on 16/1/1875 in Hammersmith.
Her parents are supposed to have been Isaac & Mary Tappern. Isaac was a gamekeeper in Goring Heath and the rest of the family have been tied together in other census records etc, but not Eleanor. An older family member(no longer with us) said that she was born 29/1/1850, but this would have clashed with another child, and there is an entry in a family bible saying a year later,29/1/1851 (but this was written in by someone at a later date).
We have been told that the Tapperns were buried at Goring, having spent their whole life in the area, so it would be unlikely that Eleanor would have been born anywhere else, if she was Isaac & Mary's child, as the family believed.
No one else researching the Tapperns has ever come across Eleanor, and we have not found a 1861 census, to see if she was mentioned with the family. By 1871 she would have left her parents, and probably be in service, although I have not found her yet.
What I would love to know is whether she was ever christened. If so it should have been in Goring, and perhaps there might be confirmation of her parentage and birth date.
I can see you must be very busy, but since this has been a mystery for so long, it can easily wait a bit longer.
Any help would be appreciated.

Barbara

Maggi,

That's amazing! Words cannot express how much help you have been!

I had been stuck for about 2 years, and knew virtually nothing about my dad's side of the family. Now i've finally got a foot in the door, so to speak.

Thank you sooo much for spending the time researching a family that isn't even your own. It is very much appreciated!

You are a star :)

With sincerest thanks and kindest regards,

Kevin.
