Thomas and John were the two younger brothers of Robert Wilkinson, my great x 3 grandfather. Lived in Newcastle upon Tyne. Now they ended up in USA in the 1880 Census, Thomas in Genessee, Wisconsin and John in Cedar Co, Iowa (and I have traced them back to Pennsylvannia in the 1850 census). Now can anyone help me to establish the link between two boys growing up in Newcastle in 1820's and their appearance in USA in 1830 - 40s ? Possibly the law might have had a hand in this. One of my 4th cousins in Newcastle reported that possibly Thomas and John were convicted of chicken stealing in 1820 and sentenced to 7 years. Now could this have been seven years transportation to the West Indies (and when they were freed, or before that) , got employment as sailors on ships taking them to USA ? They both ended up in neighbouring counties of Pennsylvannia - getting married - and moving west in 1860's.

This looks like the same Thomas being admitted to a prison hulk:

UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849
about Thos Wilkinson Name: Thos Wilkinson
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1806
Date Received: 28 Mar 1836
Ship: Justitia
Place Moored: Woolwich
Date Convicted: 16 Mar 1836
Place Convicted: Newcastle Upon Tyne

His crime was horse stealing. In the last column it says VDL 15 Aug. 18?? I don't know what VDL stands for. Some of the others have NSW in that column. I realize that's probably New South Wales.

VDL is Van Diemens Land

Van Diemens Land! Duh! I should have known that!
So probably a different fellow if he ended up in America? And the fact that he stole a horse instead of a chicken!

Robert Wilkinson's DoB was 3rd Nov 1800, Bapt 29th Mar 1801
Thomas Wilk DoB was 11th Nov 1803, bapt 13th May 1804
John Wilk DoB was either 13th or 20th Mar,1807, bapt 7th Feb 08

Their parents were Robert Wilkinson 1775 and Jane Stobbart 1771, both from Bywell.

I have tracked down Robert (buried in Heworth) to me - he is my great x 3 grandfather. But the others do not exist on any UK census - but they do appear in America. Both appeared in Pennsylvannia 1840 and 1860 (in two neighbouring counties) then in 1870 and 1880 in neighbouring states Wisconsin
and Iowa.
However maybe they both just died between 1810 and 1820
