Was Chaplin really a Frenchman and called Thornstein?

In the 1891 census you can see a young Charlie Chaplin living at home with his half-brother Sydney and his mother, Hannah, a ‘Professional Singer of Music’ in Walworth. Search for Charles Chaplin born in 1889.
