Jane 123.
Maria was born in 1865 and she was still alive when my mother was born in 1920 , my mum could remembered her as she used to tell her off for being naughty in WELSH . so I think she must have died around 1926 . I wish I knew more about her .

Denise , Not a silly question at all :-)
On my gran's birth cert says Maria Fick ..It has been know that in them days , people did try to cover themselves by useing another name to save embarrassment .

Do you know who Henry's father was and what he did?

You could get the marriage of Henry to Maria Leek and see if Henry's fathers details match up.

Rose,
Both years are the same family only , the 1901 is when Henry left Maria and the children on the Isle of Man ,I'm only going off in what my gran told me. (things in them days are not always true )

I wonder if they did marry in Shropshire or the Isle of Man .
I have been thinking of writing to Shropshire registry office as I can't use the phone cos of my deafness , would is be worthwhile ?, they do charge £18.00 for a research and £10.00 for a certificate , It's cheaper than travelling down from the Scottish Borders .

If you search for Henry Ramsbottoms marrying a Maria there are only 4.

Marriages Jun 1840
RAMSBOTTOM Henry Blackburn 21 15

Marriages Dec 1842
RAMSBOTTOM Henry Bury 21 186

Marriages Sep 1864
Ramsbottom Henry Norwich 4b 251
