Hi Derek

I am still confused - the Chelmorton date is later than the Monyash date, so it couldn't have been his birth (unless an error of course). There is another Thomas born 1800 in Flagg, who became an Inn Keeper at Flagg and married Ellen (Skidmore) at Chelmorton in 1835, but he is not my Thomas. If his parents were also Joseph and Mary, he could account for one of these baptisms but if you can find a Flagg baptism that would stop me going down that route.

There ARE other children, two Josephs baptised 1793 and 1794 and John 1797 all at Chelmorton, no mention of them at Monyash on IGI.

I didn't miss your ref to Jesus! According to IGI Joseph's wife is Mary Dawson (was Newton just a slip or is the IGI wrong?). Yes, we believe Thomas married Margaret Hill, then Mary (not Elizabeth) Swindell (still alive in 1841), but 3rd wife was Eliza Reece married 14 Nov 1850 all at Tideswell.

The two burials are possible, but no proof.

AS usual, many thanks.

Margaret

Hi Derek

Do you have any records for Repton?

John WATSON was bc1817 in Repton. His father was William.

Jane PEARSON was bc1833 in Repton. Her parents were Charles PEARSON and Mary ? Charles was bc1789 and Mary bc1790.

John and Jane married 24 Apr 1853 St Martin, Birmingham

Any help on these two families greatly appreciated
Thanks

Hi AGAIN Derek

Now onto to the "other" Needhams. William b 1796 married Sarah Gregory 17 Nov 1817 in Hope, two children, Mary 1818 and George 1819 born Tideswell. Sarah died, he remarried Hannah Downing 22 Nov 1824 and had 7 further children with her. Mary 1818 is my ancestor. No sign of her in 1841, she married Abraham Oldfield of Macclesfield in 1847, I have a full history of her after that date.

Hannah died 1855 in Cressbrook, and I think William remarried Ann somebody before 1861, but no idea who she was. No children from that marriage. William is widowed again between 1871 and 1881. No death of Ann Needham found.

Any advice on who he married for the third time?

Only parents of William b 1796 are George Needham and Rebecca Drabble, George of Beeley, and married in Eyam. Does this tie in with your records, Derek?

I do have the Tideswell CD but it keeps zonking me out of things, sorry, hope you can help or confirm.

Derek Report 16 Jan 2009 13:41

Fudgey.........Bit of a problem here.........JOSEPH bapt Mackworth 08.10.1743..son of Joseph and Elizabeth..is in fact one of a long list of GORST's............I'd say it was perhaps a mistransciption but there are large number of GORST's

On the other hand Joseph and Elizabeth Gorse had three children
Elizabeth 03.03.1733
Katherine 05.06.1737
Ellen 16.03.1739

No mention of your later Gorse's in the Parish register for mackworth.

I'm investigating..get back to you.

Hi Gill.......the children are those of Joseph Gorst and Anne.......I suppose the two names are interchangeable, but I'm not entirely happy about it...

Assuming they are interchangeable...we have four children of Joseph and Elizabeth. including Joseph 08.10.1743

He then has the children you name, but I can't find Henry....I noticed the two Joseph's 1773 and 1781.presuming the second is a replacement for the `death of the first.........NO burial for Joseph between 1773 and 1781....

Two Elizabeth's..thats fine becasue the first was baptised 17.04.1770. and fied 1773..and the second Elizabeth baptised 03.06.1779

Ann(e) wife of joseph died 18.07 1790

I have two "Elizabeth" marriages 1810 and 1812...but neither seem to be yours..

See you later

Thankyou so much for your help with this one Derek, strange you're not able to find marriage for Elizabeth 1779 to Robert Gaunt,..he was baptised 1770 Longford ,most of their children were also baptised Longford,do you have any records for that area,? is it near Sutton on the Hill,? any chance they could have married there? crikes all these questions...

Derek Report 17 Jan 2009 00:10

Hi Margaret..ok here's what I have........
George Needham ( of Hope) married Rebecca Drable at Eyam 30.08.1791
They had four children..all at Tideswell
WILLIAM 17.07.1796
Robert 13.05.1798
Samuel 30.12.1804
Peter 30.04.1806

Notice that the Eyam marriage gives George from Hope..not Beeley.

I only have partial records for Hope.....so your later enquiries I need to answer by a visit ot matlock.........

Any good?

Derek

Madmeg Report 17 Jan 2009 21:53

Thanks Derek, I also had Francis 1793 and George 1794 christened Tideswell but with no mother named.

It would seem to be the correct William from his age on census records but there is nothing online to indicate a George born in Hope. If you get to the records office.......

You have already been so helpful.

Hi Margaret..I don't mean to confuse you...the parish entry says George FROM Hope.....doesn't mean he was born or baptised there.
I have a long term , and probably insoluble, problem in my own tree...
My GGG Grandparents marriage was in Ashford derbyshire.....both shown as (of Ashford)..this is 1802.....and there is no indication where either of them was born or baptised! So i am knackered!!
