Donna Report 13 May 2009 11:05

I have just posted my reply to the lady from yesterday asking lots of questions with regards to Maud's shop etc...
I have also posted messages to People who have the same name as the grandson on facebook.

I will keep you all informed as my family are sick of hearing about it now and I totally confuse them.lol
Its become the niggle that even if I spend years on it i'll get to the bottom of it.

I will contact Newham library re electral roll or ask a rellie who lives in Surrey the next time they are visiting the area to do some digging for me.
I am meeting them on Tuesday at a family reunion of aunts cousins etc.. that have been found through genes.
I found my dad had 2 more siters and shared the same mother. What am I to their chidren? Am i a cousin?

I don't think there is a connection in New Mills, but you never can tell if the GAGES moved up north and out of London. If you bump into her again then certainly ask if she is from the area, but don't go out of you way Maggie. Thanks anyway its amazing what you come across.

Henry Severy Gage 3rd b 1916 was in the second world war and I have his army number and regiment. Are there any sights that will give records online of a private in ww2?

Thanks
Donna

Donna, I have been following your story with alacrity from the start. I do so hope you get to the bottom of it, and please don't let your avid readers and supporters (even useless ones like me) be left out of the final loop, whatever you do!!

I, too, am totally fascinated,

Meri

Hi Donna

I reckon if someone is on facebook - they are "out there" and open to approach.

Donna,

This thread needs to be kept alive! You/we need to get to the bottom of it and the more members who read it the better the chance.

Re the electoral roll, have you thought about contacting the local family history library for a look-up? I've done this in the past and they've been most helpful, mine was in Yorkshire, but maybe you will have the same luck, the Yorkshire one didn't charge if the look-up took less than half an hour.

Donna

I went to the opticians today for an eye test. While in the waiting area, an old lady came in and said she had an appointment for 2.15. The Receptionist said she had no appointment booked, but asked the lady's name. She said "Gage" and spelt it out. I sat bolt upright! But before I could accost her, the optician called me in. It is not a local surname known to me. The lady said she had come from New Mills (Derbyshire, next town from me). Do you want me to see if I can find her?

Just found that WilliamHenry Pickin's brother John Pickin and his wife Mabel gage who is Henry Severy's sister lived at 60 cemetery road and maud lived at 58 the shop next door.

Funny how things work out. These two families seemed to take over Odessa Rd and Cemetery Road.

Donna Report 12 May 2009 13:25

Just recieved a letter from the daughter in law of Henry Severy GAGE B 1916.
She couldn't remember much about his mother only that she had a shop at 58 cemetery rd forest gate. The shop was bombed in the war and she moved round the corner to 141 Odessa rd Forest gate. What I need is someone in that area to do an electral roll search at these addresses to see which husband was living with Maud.

The plot thickens!!

Anyone live in the forest gate area willing to do a search.

Thanks
Donna

The friend already passed on my original letter, but no joy in a reply.

Its sad to say that I have now searched facebook and found him. I feel a bit funny contacting him though as hes not replied to my letter.

Should I just bite the bullet and send a message anyway?

Great idea, Victoria.

Donna, if you don't have his address, would you feel comfortable writing via Joyce's friend and asking her to pass your letter on?

Hi Donna

I am utterly confused at this stage BUT it seems to me entirely likely that a grandson could/would have a computer, or at the least, have access to one .

How about a letter telling him about this thread [accessible to non-members] - and if that doesn't yield a response - nothing will!

Fascinated - Victoria

That is a shame, Donna, but maybe he will get back to you eventually. Did Joyce's friend reply to your second letter? Could you ask her for the grandson's address, and write to him pleading for any info he may have, lol.

Well, anyway, now the threads been bumped up it may attract some interest, and someone else could just see something we've all missed.

Good luck, Donna.

Donna Report 11 May 2009 21:46

No he didn't write back. I wrote another letter to the friend of Joyce's who replied to my letter. It was my last hope of some new info ,so a real shame. I have an idea where he lives .but don't want to contact him incase he thinks I'm a stalker. hahaha!!
Not everyone shares my obsession with this family tree lark only you lot on here.

Thanks for asking.

I recieved a letter today in response to the one I sent to Henry Gage's wife Joyce. Sadly shes passed away and so did her son.Joyce's friend sent me the letter telling me that the grandson would be getting in touch soon with me. Very excited that I may learn something from family tales or knowledge. If not I'm sure he will be interested in finding out about his ancestors and learning that he still lives in the area where they were over 150yrs ago.

Yes gave her my address tel number and email just in case.
Still not heard anything from her. Don't know what else to do now with this problem.
A friend is going to Kew next week and said she will search for a divorce for Henry and Maud.

I do hope she finds something!!

Hi Donna,

Good luck. I hope Henry's wife writes back to you, did you give her your tel number?

Do keep us informed of any further information you receive.

The 1919 marriage cert for Maud states she is a spinster which she isn't . She married Henry S Gage in 1915.
I have been reading about poor mans divorce when they didn't actually divorce just seperate and marry someone else-bigamy. There was a jail sentence for this.
Still doesn't explain where Henry and Maud got to later in Life .Still no death for them both to be found.
Their son Henry b 1916 is my last hope . He died in 1992,but I have a possible wife for him who still lives close to Field Ave and incidently the same rd that the rest of my rellies lived so many yrs ago.
I have writen her a letter and posted it.
Fingers crossed she is interested to learn more and get in touch with me.

No reply yet!!!

Donna,
I have a marriage cert from 1950 which shows that both parties had been divorced (from each other as it happens - it's not just your family that is confusing).
If you have the marriage cert for 1919 i would expect it to show the correct previous maritial status for maud, ie spinster, widow, divorced so that might give you another piece of information.
